Disconnect the speedometer cable and gear from the transmission.Remove retainer clip from plastic gear, and remove gear.Connect a drill to the speedometer cable and spin it while watching the speedometer. If the speedometer works.look carefully at the plastic gear you removed. If it looks apple cored, thats the cause.Replace gear and problem fixed. The majority of the time,it is the gear gone bad.If the gear is in good condition, and spinning the cable manually still results in no speedometer,it is time to remove the cable for inspection,or disconnect it from the speedo head in the dash, and spin it,and have a helper verify the dash end is or isn't spinning. If it isn't spinning on both ends, the cable is broken inside somewhere. If it IS spinning both ends, then the cable is good, and the speedo in the dash is now identified as the culprit.Good luck.

Hello,
Try bumping the dash right above the cluster while driving pay attention to traffic-if the trans is shifting smooth evidently the pcm is still getting a rpm signal from the trans. could be a loose connection around the cluster..Thank you..

Please post on how things turned or for further assistance..

Regards!!..

Id say its a loose connection or the meter might need to be replaced.

SOURCE: speedometer not working

Check the gear very carefully that goes on the end at the transmission. It is plastic, and retained with a metal spring clip. The plastic can become "applecored" where as it doesnt make contact with the drive teeth on the transmission output shaft. If the gear is in order, the speedo cable operates correctly, and checks out ok,then it is likely a bad speedo head in the dash.Later model Ford trucks all used a PSOM (programmable, speedomoeter, odometer module) that was known to be somewhat problematic, but i think your year Ford is too early to have a PSOM.

How do i connect a wrangler speedometer to a turbo 350 transmission

Your factory tach won't be accurate because a 350 is an 8 cylinder engine. I put a 350 into a Vega, and my speedo was slightly off because of the differences between the ratios as well. I recommend looking for an aftermarket adapter, or a kit if you can't get the cable to connect into the tranny.

I have a 1985 S10 with a 4 cyl engine 4 speed . Can I use a later model 5 speed trans in this truck with the 4 cyl engine?

I believe so. The 4.3 has the same bell housing as 350/305. It is different from 2.8 and 2.5. But from what I remember the 2.8 and 2.5 were the same. I can only speak for years up to 93. I know on the later models the slave cylinder is inside bell housing and the speedometer would be different. Probably too much trouble even if bell housing was the same.

1985 Nissan 300ZX - Speedometer

Sounds like the problem is in the speedo head itself, in the dash. If fuild was leaking, I don't think the speedometer would work either? Sounds like the gear that turns the number wheels maybe bad or stripped.

there is a clamp that either needs to be removed (10mm bolt holds it on) or on some transmisions it's an O-Ring that allows you to remove the speedo gear.

remove the speedo gear and bring it to the parts store so they can match up the identical amount of teeth so that the new one will not make your speedo run fast or slow. The gears are color coded however i have seen many instances where aftermarket ones have thier own color scheme and the convert charts are inaccurate so count the teeth
