Question about 1997 Audi A6
Sounds like either the cam angle sensor or crank angle sensor.
Did you happen to turn the ignition key to off while the car was running and still moving then turn it back to on?

But the first step is check the BATTERY condition..
See if is full charged..
because is the common simptoms of that problem.
If yes with a TEST light you can check the 12v at the starter motor., when other person. try to start.
If there a signal. the more probable is the starter bad.
If not. check all the fuses and connection at the starter and relay. check the NUETRO SAFETTLY SWITCH.
or CLUTCH swithc. for proper funtion.
