I have the same problem and I wanted to unmount the ignition switch,

but I couldn't so I saw that the switch has an electrical
connection. I checked all the fuses one by one to see if there was any burned
out fuse. all of them were OK but when I finished replacing the fuses the
switch worked. it was worked until yesterday when it failed again. I moved the
fuse box and it worked again. I wonder if this is an electronic failure.

Had this same issue, turned out to be the ignition switch went bad which apparently is very common for many cars including Ford Focuses. I had Triple AAA check it out, and they told me they see this problem quite often, $277 later, car is starting with no problems. One of post we had read awhile back ago, was to hit your key in with the palm of your hand and it should get your ignition unlocked. Though, if this does work realize its only temporary, as you will get stuck one day when the key cylinders completely lock up. Good Luck!

Try turning the wheel when you are trying the key. Sometimes the steering wheel lock gets into a bind and you have to release the pressure from the steering wheel to get the key to turn.

I have 2003 ford focus -the key will go in ignition but won't turn. Also wheels are straight but steering wheel is turned n will not move..can anyone please help me?

It sounds like the steering wheel lock is in a bind. I suggest you put one hand on the key and the other on top of the steering wheel. You then try moving the wheel slightly to one side then the other as you try to turn the key. It might take a bit of oomph to get the steering wheel to move. I hope this helps.

I have a ford focus 2003- today when I exited the car nothing was unusual..when I went to try to go to work the key will go in ignition but won't turn AT ALL. Anyone know what I can do to fix it?

your steering wheel has tension on it - are your front wheels parked against a curb or were you turning your steering wheel while you shut off the car? Try pulling hard left and turning the key. If that doesn't work, pull hard right while turning the key. You may have to pull really hard if you are a smaller person.

When you look under the front left tire on my 2003 ford focus there is a steel bar with a ball on the end, that is hanging down. What is it for and where does it go?

Sounds like the tierod end..It hooks into the spindle..The spindle is what your tire is bolted to..If that is what your talking about,,then your wheel will not turn on that side,, when you turn the steering wheel..

My ford focus 2003 zts steering is locked and the key cant turn how do i unlocked the steering wheel when I open the base of the wheel.

try turning the steering while at the same time turning the key, also try spraying some wd40 into the keyhole and try the same.

if this does not work, usually you have to drill out the dead lock but then afterwards you will need a new steering lock if you want it in the future. this has been dont this way to stop theves deactivating the lock.

I hope this was useful.

Locked up Steering Wheel

Your Wheels may not be straight which could cause the steering wheel lock to get stuck. Turn the steering wheel left and right, from one stop to the other, watching how far the wheel travels. Now, turn the wheel to the center of the travel distance and turn the key. If this doesn't free it up, turn the key as you turn the steering wheel left then right to get the lock to release the wheel. Hope this helps and please rate my solution - and thanks for using Fixya!!
