I have the same problem. My engine seems to be making the whining noise when I turn it on and gets worse when I accelerate. I was told that the power steering fluid was low. It was low, but after putting more in, it still didn't fix it. Any ideas? It down seems to get better when I move the steering wheel to the right slightly so the steering may have something to do with it.

I have the same problem. I thought that mine was the serpentine belt itself. I replaced it and I get the same thing still. It does seem to be coming from the side with the idler pulley, so I may try and replace that as well. It did have a very slight play to it.

mine sounds like the power steering pump. i changed it and its still making the same noise. i hope its the idler pulley

how do you change the idler pulley the part that the serpentine belt actually sits on flew off and snaped the belt. do you need to take the altenator out first to be able to get to the bolts.

I have a 2006 Trailblazer LS with the 4.2L I6 Engine. I have a "whining" noise coming from the engine. It raises in pitch when I accelerate and never stops the entire time the engine is running. I have removed the belt completely and run the engine and the noise is still there. Upon using a cheap mechanics stethascope, the noise sounds like it is coming from the top front of the engine, maybe around the cams? I have replaced both the tension idler pulley and the idler pulley with no success. thoughts?

Just had an oil change a few weeks back and since then it has been making that whining noise. very loud when the car starts and idles. seems to go away later on in the drive but who knows with all the outside noise. I may have to check on this idler pulley. can anyone verify the miles they had when this started? Mine is around 48k. I also think it is time to replace the brakes too.

It is the idler pulley. Change it before it seizes and snaps the serpentine belt. It should be a relatively inexpensive repair.

I had the same problem. We are getting ready to change the idler pulley. It's only about $18.00. The noise is caused when the bearing on the pulley wears out.

Driving a good distance car makes a whamming sound the more Itry to accelerate the speed decreases whinning louder only stops whinning when I pull over to let the car cool down

Have your wheel bearings checked, when a wheel bearing is going bad it hums louder as you accelerate, when you stop or slow down the sound stops. A bad bearing does that, it over heats due to it not having enough grease on the bearing and will hum as you drive and get louder as you accelerate.

I have a ford taurus 2003 . when i start the car the whining noise isnt present but once i go down the road it starts and gets louder the faster i go . i am thinking transmission . anything i can do ? ....

Actually it sounds more like a wheel bearing(rear wheels) or hub bearing(front). You should make every attempt to get this fixed as soon as possible. If you continually drive the vehicle, the defected bearing(s) can and will seize up, locking that wheel and most likely causing other significant damage to your vehicle.

Is it a bearing or the cv-joint that makes a loud humming sound in the front end when driving at any speed?

ITS PROBABLY TOUR WHEEL BEARING . IF YOUR GOING DOWN THE ROAD AND THE LONGER YOU DRIVE THE LOUDER IT GETS. OR IF YOU TAKE YOUR WHEEL AND GO BACK AND FORTH A LITTLE WHILE MOVING AND THE NOISE COMES AND GOES ITS PROBABLY A BEARING . A CV JOINT WILL POP WHEN TURNING HARD AND ACCELERATING . THIS BEARING PRESSES IN WITH THE HUB ITS A PRETTY DIFFICULT JOB IF YOUR NOT A TECHNICIAN WELL GOOD LUCK

The car makes a howling noise while driving it

well did the noise start after the tires were rotated?could be choppy tires,,,if not ,i strongly think it sounds like a bad wheel bearing,,,,if you drive and while its making the noise turn left and right quick and see if the noise gets louder and which way turning makes it louder,,if you turn leftand it gets louder its usually the right wheels bearing as you are putting load on it, if it makes the noise louder while turning right its the left wheel bearing,,,got it

Alero loud humming/roaring sound coming from front end.

That's indicative of a wheel bearing, which is why you were told to change that out. However, it's also possible that the carrier bearings in the differential (where the drive axles attach) have gone bad. That happened to me on my 300ZX several years ago, and I had to replace the diff bearings. I would have them checked out somewhere other than a dealer (you'll probably get a better price from an independent shop).

As a sidenote, to be sure it wasn't a wheel bearing, if you hear it quiet down in a turn one way but get louder in a turn the opposite way, it's likely the wheel bearing. If you turn left at speed and it gets louder, then it's the right bearing (since you're loading up that side of the car). If it gets quieter in a right turn, it's the right side (you're unloading that side of the car and not putting as much weight on it, so it doesn't drag as badly). See if you get that symptom just to be sure that the wrong side front wheel bearing wasn't changed.
