Question about 2000 Volkswagen Golf
On a 2000 Golf, the switch is integrated into the door. Other symptoms you may notice are your alarm not working properly (see if your alarm will arm with the door open, it shouldn't), interior light not working, and so forth. It can be fixed, though it's not an easy task. See this website for details: http://dubdiy.net/interior/mm.html
I would recommend taking it to a shop to perform the work as it involves tearing the entire door apart, unlike earlier VWs where the switch was inside the door jamb.

There is a switch in the door jamb that is a grounded switch if it is stuck than the lights will not turn on. If it is stuck shut I should say. This switch looks like a button not a regular switch. The button is spring loaded. Check that first. Also is it only with the rt frt door? or do other doors cause the same problem?
