The engine turns over, acts like it wants to start when it's first rolled over, then will not fire after that. Someone suggested timing chain or belt. It's a 1993 Chevy Lumina Euro - 2Dr, 3.1L - 111,000 miles

If timing chain breaks, will the car get fire?

If the timing chain breaks, the engine will stop immediatly, but there is no risk of fire. The main problem with this situation is that, if one of the valves fluctuate, it might impact with the cylinder head and make a big problem, a costly one. You'd have to open the engine to look at the cylinder head to see if it suffered any kind of damage. My suggestion is that you replace the timing chain before something like this happens and you get a bigger headache.

Timing belt chain

If you have someone to assist you, remove the distributor cap, then have someone crank the engine when you are watching the distributor. If the rotor button does not turn with the engine then you have either broken the drive or your timing chain. this is the first check, then get in touch for the next step

Would jumped timing cause no fire or no start

It would cause an erratic fire, but probably won't start. If the chain or belt is broken, there will be no fire either. Remove the dist. cap and check to see if the rotor is turning while someone else is cranking the engine over... If not, belt is broken! Another way to check, is to remove the oil cap, if you can see the valves, get someone to crank it over, if they are not moving, belt is broken. In any of these cases, it sounds like it will need a new belt installed!

1996 gmc c 1500 won't start back fired & died & red light us on on my hyper teck power tuner

Sounds like your timing chain has jumped out of time, if the timing chain is old, the chain jump a few teeth putting it out of time having it fire at the wrong time when the exhaust valve is open. Check timing by pulling #1 plug - bring #1 piston to the top and line up timing mark , Ifind it easy to put thumb over spark plug hole and have someone bump the engine over and feel the pressure relief stop before you feel vacumm - timing mark should line up if the timing hasn't jumped

I have a 1992 cadillac deville and two days ago while I was driving the engine stammered then shut off as I was turning at an intersection. It will not start and acts as if it is out of gas. It will also...

Could be something in the distributor cap, a blockage in the fuel line, even a bad timing chain.
You need to know if you are getting spark to all of the plugs, fuel pressure to the injectors, and normal compression.
If it is a fuel problem you should be able to spray carb cleaner into the throttle body to make it try to start. If you have spark but at the wrong time, it will backfire by firing on the wrong cylinders. This can be caused by a faulty dist cap or rotor, or the timing chain.

if it broke a timing belt or chain it would roll alot faster than normal.. if it just jumped time a notch or two it would still act like it was trying to start.. a chrankshaft sensor is a place to start.. but check to see if its firing first before you replace it because it could be the fuel also.. take a sparkplug out of the car and then plug it on the wire.. take an good insulated pair of pliers and hold the part of the spark plug that your socket goes on against a metal part of your motor.. then have someone roll the vehicle over while you watch the spark plug you can see the spark ti generates if vehicle is firing..if it is firing good then its probably in the fuel system.. hope this helps

1998 Malibu will not turn start, the car acts like it wants to start but it will not turn over? Ive had a the starter replaced, plugs replaced? any advice could this be the timing chain?

If timing chain has failed, the engine will usually turn over faster than normal (first clue) You can also check distributor rotor to see if while cranking it turns normally and does not "stutter". Additionally compression will be very low. Not knowing which engine you have, I'd suggest you check the basics...fuel, spark etc, to make sure your'e not randomly guessing at the problem. A computer code check would not be a bad idea either!
