My car remote won't work... sometimes! (I think it's also referred to as a "fob"?) A lot of times I find myself repeatedly pressing the buttons (lock, unlock, set alarm, and open trunk) for my car, but it won't work. I'll try taking a couple steps back, walk around the car, point the remote at the car from high in the air... just some silly things to try and get it to work. I've also tried changing the battery and this just doesn't help.
I have 2 of the same remote (2009 Chevy - with remote start) that I bought brand new online and had a car dealership program for me. One remote was for back-up in case the other one stopped working, like the one that came with the car. The first worked fine for a couple of months and now it's just frustrating to try and lock/unlock my car with them. I opened the second one and it works just as good as the first one... HORRIBLY! Like I said, I have tried changing the batteries, (ensuring it's the correct battery, of course) however it doesn't seem right for the battery to deplete in such a short time.
Usually after a couple minutes of trying, the remote will magically work. However, after I got off work last night I spent about 10 minutes trying to get my remote to work and finally gave up (this was with second remote that I just opened about 4 days ago). My car alarm was going off and I couldn't stop it because my remote won't work! I've had enough of these games... please help me!
I've only owned this car since July 2010. The remotes started acting up about 3 months after I got it.
Do you have any ideas as to what the problem may be? Should I take my car in and get the receiver looked at?

Car electronics can be very tricky sometimes. Changing the battery in your remote should not cause any need to reprogram your key or remote. I have a trick for you to try:
The old car battery reset trick
I know this sounds absurd, but it works sometimes and is worth trying. If you exhausted all of the options above, disconnect bot terminals on your car battery for 10 minutes. Then reconnect them and try your key fob. This has worked for many people and I have no idea why. If you do, please comment below to explain.
Hopefully this helps out, you would be surprised how many electrical issues this little trick will fix on any vehicle.
sure sometimes.
the operators guide in the glove box covers this. fact.
and changes ever year, to make everyone crazy
if you lost your book in 1 year, then get one.
all cars take one good fob to start, mine takes 2.(jeep)
there are lots of hidden rules, max life time keys, and other bs.
but here is the first google hit. on your car.
but do read your opr guide, it too , is online at toyota.
first hit. im so lucky.
Seperate key fobs only can be programmed in the following way.
Turn ignition on/off 8 x times (allow all functions to stabilise) after the 9th on - press a button on both remote fobs. then turn ign. off. use good remote to lock and then try new remote to unlock/lock. sometimes it works first time - sometimes you have to repeat actions. good luck.
The good news is that you are going to most likely be able to fix this program with your 2001 Ford Focus Key Fob. Follow the steps below and you should be able to get it working again:
1) Change the battery
Batteries don't last forever, you'll be surprised how often it's just a dead battery! Click here for a video on how to open a GM key fob, or search our YouTube channel on how to change a battery for your specific year, make, and model!
2) Wipe the board
The board inside your remote can get a lot more filthy than you think! When the board is dirty it can prohibit the contact to the circuit board when you push down on the button. Simply wiping the circuit board off can make your key fob like new again!

4) Get it checked
Go to your local hardware store like AutoZone or Oreilly's. They usually have a RF frequency tester. This little gadget will let you know if your key fob is sending a signal. If it is, you may need to reprogram your key fob to your vehicle
5) Reprogram:
*** THERE ARE 2 POSSIBLE PROGRAMMING PROCEDURES. ***Procedure #1Note: Obtain all remote transmitters for this vehicle.
Note: Do not depress the brake pedal during procedure.
Turn ignition from OFF to RUN 8 times within 10 seconds, with the 8th time ending in RUN. Door locks will cycle to confirm programming mode. (Off is the position where you can remove your key, RUN is the position just shy of starting your car.)
Within 20 seconds press any button on the first keyless remote to be programmed. Door locks will cycle to confirm programming. If you only have one remote then skip to step 4.
Within 20 seconds, press any button on the second keyless remote. Door locks will cycle again to confirm programming. Repeat step 3. For all other remotes.
Turn ignition to OFF. Locks will again cycle to indicate end of programming mode.
Procedure #2Note: Obtain all remote transmitters for this vehicle.1Fasten seat belts and close all doors.
Turn ignition from OFF to RUN 4 times within 6 seconds, with the 4th time ending in RUN. (Off is the position where you can remove your key, RUN is the position just shy of starting your car.)
Turn ignition to OFF. Acoustic signal will sound and system warning lamp will illuminate to confirm programming mode.
Within 10 seconds, press and hold any button on the first keyless remote. Wait for acoustic sound and warning lamp to flash (confirming programming) then release button on remote. Wait 2 seconds but within 10 seconds repeat step 4. For all other remotes. If you only have one remote then continue to step 5.
Turn ignition to Crank or wait 10 seconds to end programming mode.
Couple of times when you replace the remote battery, you might
have them not working/ responding but just follow the procedure below. Stand
close to the car, hold down the open and close knobs for about 10
seconds. Press them at the same time for 3 seconds; then press the open
button as the car opens.
The above procedure is applicable to a lot of car brands. It does not matter how many knobs you might have on the remote fob.
I have carried this procedure out on a lot of brands ranging from Honda, Toyota, Rover, Ford, etc. and it works perfectly well.

Hi, Some key fobs are coded and if this is so you will need to take it to your Nissan dealer with all details of the vehicle i.e. Log book/title and vin number proof of ownership. There may be a small charge for this. Good Luck! Press the Blue Button please when satisfied with my FREE effort, Thank You! Paul 'W' U.K.
