Yes they can make a loud knocking noise, this only applies to automatic transmission flywheels known as "Flex Plates" the noise is caused by the Flex Plate being cracked.

replace the starter and the flywheel-the bad starter has not engaged the teeth on the flywheel fully and has ground some teeth off so you'll fit that space every once in a while-cheers Denny

Bad starter

It is either a bad starter or a bad fly wheel. What happens is the teeth of one or the other wear down. If you are turning the starter several times and it finally starts then you have a bad spot on your fly wheel. One way to check is to pull out the starter and look at the teeth on it. If it is your fly wheel it should be replaced but you will have some time. As the wheel turns you will probably not hit the bald spot on it that often.

I heard a knocking the other day and now it died! Here is what some people have said the noise was....fly wheel on transmission, rod knocking. I have checked all fluids and they are fine. Any ideas?

Fly wheel will not cause a knock. Knocking may be caused by insufficient oil supply within the engine. This may be caused by a failed oil pump, excessive sludge build-up, faulty rod or main bearings. Did you notice the oil light for flickering or being lit while driving?? Is the engine able to spin when you are starting it??

2000 Jeep grand cherokee 4.0 engine

HI.WELL I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START. FRIST IF IT WAS THE FLYWHEEL IT WOULD DO IT WHEN THERE IS NO STRAIN ON THE MOTOR WHEN DRIVING. THE SAME IF YOU HAD A BAD BEARING. IF I COULD JUST HEAR IT RUNNING, IT COULD BE A BAD OIL PUMP THAT COULD CAUSE IT TO RADDLE UNTIL YOUGET THE OIL BUILT UP ENOUGH TO STOP IT. HOPE THIS HELPS. JIMBO

I just got the car and drove it for about 2000 miles then i started hearing a knocking noise coming from the engine only while accelerating. i tried to see if i could here it while i was in park and...

If you can be more specific about the engine knock it might be helpful. I am assuming this knock happens after the engine warms up and can be heard while the engine is under a load. If it is a strong knock sound then it would be a crank shaft bearing. You may want to check the oil. Check for level and condition. If there are water droplets on the dip stick or anti-freeze in the oil, or oil in the anti-freeze, you could have a bad head-gasket. Redused oil pressure, pressure testing the cooling system, doing a cylinder compression test, could help in figuring it out. Also it is possible that it could be piston slap or the fly wheel is hitting inside the bell housing.
