Most times this is caused by the starter solenoid, also check the flywheel/flexplate for any damage, this can also cause the starter drive not to disengage from the flywheel.

91 toyota pick up won't' start clicking sound

your starter sounds like its sticking. the carbon brushes in older models wear down and need to be replaced. or, starter needs replacing/reconditioning. first try to tap lightly on the starter with a hammer then try to turn the key(bring hammer with you!!)
failing that you may need to get it checked. you could try a hill start to see if it is just the starter.

Need to replace the starter in my 96 nissan pickup but not sure where it is in the engine compartment...

typically the right side of the motor (standing in front of the pulleys whether your motor is transverse(sideways) or not) it's accessable from under the truck around the back of the motor where the transmission connects. the starter spins the flywheel (manual) or flexplate (automatic) to get your truck rolling. if its a stick shift and worse comes to worse and you dont want to monkey with it always park on a hill (easire said than done) and pop start it :-)
