Question about Ford Taurus

4 Answers

1993 Taurus Wagon, with just 100,000miles, going down the highway at 60mhp, the anti-lock brake and check engine lights flicker and the car hesitates, bucks, jumps, and dies...deader than a door nail! ...nothing...no lights, no radio, no door locks... but jump start the car it runs perfectly until it does it again a day later, or maybe even a week later, same thing happens...no body has come up with an answer...it always runs perfectly everytime it goes to the mechanic after it happens! Might you have an idea? Please, thanks for your assistance.

Battery has been replaced twice in the last year by AAA, but it has never been the battery.
The battery charges properly and when checked when the car is off, there is little or no voltage drop, maybe a tenth or two over a two day period!
But I will suggest and have them try the fuseable link! I'll let you know!

Around the age of your car Ford were experiencing a lot of problems with the fuse boxes on Escorts in the UK.
Check the connections to the fuse box, make sure they are sound and clean. Check the fuses and relays themselves to make sure they have a good firm contact in the fuse box.
Check the ignition circuit relay, pull it out and inspect the spade terminals, make sure they are not dirty or burnt (a sign of arcing).

Hi,

The vehicle's battery + terminal would have two wires; the biggest would go to the starter motor and a smaller one to the electrical system of the car. Pls check the smaller wire. This is actually a fusible link 6~8 inches long and ends on a connector that leads to a wire that goes to the harness. often this connector and the spade lug gets corroded or cooked. Try to clean/scrape and ensure positive contact. There are some instances that the connector are cut out and the link is directly spliced to the wire of the harness.

Additionally, when you posted "jump start", do you mean the battery is discharged?

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Hi again, Appreciate the postback and additional information. I f I may add, if by chance it is indeed the fusible link and you would opt for splicing, may I suggest to solder the joint.

In most case you fix this replacing the battery, it has probably gone and does not keep charge, goes flat and you get the problem.

Well, if it has gone to a mechanic and has checked battery and alternator, then there is somthing shorting in electric wirings, a cable causing a short with body of car, a bad connector, instrument panel or other device shorting out.
You need to get a mechanic to check the car wiring, if it happens more time is not a battery or alternator problem, and can cause further damage.

Brakes go all the way to the floor

Don't know about the check engine light, but if brakes go all the way down, you either have a bad leak or the master cylinder has gone bad.
If the car has anti-lock brakes,it needs a mechanic to do the bleeding of the brakes the correct way. don-ohio (:^)

The ABS light came on the car stop for a minute after a while I cut the car back on and it started. what is a ABS and where is it located on a ford taurus 1996 car.

The "ABS" or Anti-lock Brake System is exactly that. When the brake pedal is pressed in a harsh or panic manner the "ABS" senses the tires locking up or skidding. It releases just enough brake pressure to allow the tire to rotate thereby giving control back to the driver. It allows the shortest stopping distance. The "ABS" control module will be located next to the Brake Master Cykinder in the engine compartment and attached by steel brake lines. If the "ABS" light is coming on then the system is malfunctioning and should be checked as soon as possiable.

Anti lock light , what id mean

The antilock brake system light will go on (ABS) if the sensor in one of the wheels does not detect the correct speed which is essential for the antilock braking system to work properly.

Taurus SE/Wagon 1998. Oil light stays on, has a clanking in the engine while driving down highway. Smoke started coming out of the exhaust. My husband went online to check and see what he thought might be...

yes this may be the problem i would recomend changing the oil sending unit first and if this does not fix it replace the oil pump and you should not drive it with no oil pressure it can burn up the bearings in the motor

I have a1993 Fird Taurus wagon. The brake lights

Check all fuses with a test light with key on.
This is the best way to do it on Fords.
Change all blown fuses.
Are the brake light BULBS OK?
This is the more common cause of.....no brake lights.
....and don't forget the brake light switch if all this fails.
