Question about 1996 Toyota Land Cruiser

HDJ81 Landruiser with automatic transmission

I have a problem with the automatic transmission dropping down a gear momentarily by itself when driving then back up again. This may happen once or many times and then be ok for another half an hours driving. Any ideas?

When does it do that and what gear does the transmission downshift? What kind of speed does this happen?

I I have lost drive & third gear in my 94 cutlass supreme 3.1 I was wondering what should I do

Well, problems with automatics are why there are so many auto transmission shops. There are hardly any shadetree mechanics and not that many ASE-certified mechanics who feel confident enough and knowledgeable enough to tear down and rebuild an automatic. And, very likely, that's what your ****** requires. One question: how long has it been out, and are you familiar with how a transmission starts to "slip" in the gears before it goes entirely? If it just started, you might want to try a fluid and filter change(drop your transmission pan, drain fluid, change filters{its right there after dropping pan}, new pan gasket, and re-install pan). Really about all the average person can do is checking the fluid to make sure it's full in an automatic. Any problems usually require a trip to a shop.

Momentarily pulls left when accelerating (feels drifty/floaty like being pushed sideways by a strong breeze) then pulls right(same thing) when letting off accelerator. No play/slop in steering.

If you are driving any front wheel drive vehicle, what you are feeling is called torque steer....sometimes it's from poor design but it can also be caused by a broken engine or transmission mount allowing the engine/trans assembly to shift under load or when removing load.
You can do a quick test by holding the brake down firmly and in gear, press down on the gas. have someone watch (from the side of the car ONLY) and see if the engine shifts. Do in both drive and reverse.
Be very careful when doing this that the car does not get away from you and do not hold power for more than about fifteen seconds at a time or it can overheat the transmission. This only works in automatic trans cars... for stickshift ones you need to move the engine with a long pry bar.

Transmission problem stuck in sport shift mode

I also have a 2009 Outlander Sportronic transmission with a V6 engine.
Bought it this summer ... transmission appeared fine but seemed to automatically slow down the vehicle using the engines compression whenever I let go of the gas pedal.
Now that the cold weather is upon us here in Canada, whenever I accelarate normally (not like a teenager) the transmission takes quite a bit of time to shift into second... If I rev up the engine (quick take off) it seems to help but the shifting of gears is not as smooth as I would expect it (mildly slips and kicks into second)...

The worst is when come to a complete stop ... then the transmission kicks coming down from the higher gears???

I read somewhere that this is because this transmission is a CVT type and is learning my driving habits in order to adjust itself so the vehicle becomes more fuel efficient... Not sure but if the trany is computer controlled then it must be poorly writen program...
I'm taking the car in to the dealer and will write back on the diagnostic they give me ...

Overdrive factors

When the car is just cruising along at approx.50+ MPH push the O/D button. You should feel the gears change higher and if you have an RPM guage then it should drop as well to fewer RPMs. This would be normal driving conditions. O/D will not kick in until the last regular gear (3rd or 4th depending on model)  had been shifted into. O/D automatically kicks out when slowing down and the transmission shifts to a lower gear. Thus the O/D has no function at slower speeds/gears and does not need to be shifted ( on or off ) except in the very first example given here.

20 year old vacuum hoses are done. Replace all you can. The little plastic ones too. They control everything, transmission, computer, fuel, brakes, everything.
