Any guides on how to check a cv joint?

My 2.8L is making a low humming noise when I turn the wheels. Another person posted the same problem and was told to check the cv joint. Any guides on how to do this? I'm a n00b thanx.

Usually when a CV joint goes bad, it's because the rubber boot has become torn or otherwise open to the elements, and dirt/grit/etc has gotten in there and ruined the joint. If the boots are intact, chances are that the CV joint is OK.

It may be a wheel bearing too - this could be an early sign of it. Audi is known for wheel bearing failures.

If cv joint is bad car has a lot of vibration, boots arent torn or leaking, but makes a humming noise. is this cv joint or something else?

cv joints should not click as that is the first indication of a failed unit
( going slow and changing direction produces a click, click is a cv joint)
wheel bearings should not be tight as that will produce a humming noise and will result in early failure
because the axle turns with the change of direction ,the distance from the pivot point to the transmission changes and so the shaft will move in and out of the transmission to compensate
take it to an accredited drive line specialist for a diagnosis

I have a 1999 jeep cherokee limited when I am driving there is a humming/growling sound that comes from the front drivers side. It seems that it is almost draging the vehicle? Would this problem be a wheel...

cv joints don't always click, mainly they click when turning, But worn ones will also make noise,, since you have to remove the wheel anyway ,, I'd check the bearing first, then move onto the cv joints

BEARING NOISE IN FRONT END RT SIDE DODGE SUV DORANGO COULD IT BE CV JOINTS OR BEARING IN FRONT HUMS

Most likely it is the RH front wheel bearings. CV Joints don't usually make any noise until you turn a rather sharp corner. I would advise you to replace the bearings and seals in both front wheels if the bearings are in fact noisy. Jack up the front and spin each wheel, you'll soon hear the sound of rumbling bearings.

Is it a clicking sound ??
Does it do it more on turns & accelarating ??
Could be a cv joint..
Check the cv boots for sepration, splits, cracks ect..

Humming sound when going over 30 mph

The out put shaft bearing may have gone bad and the transmission oil is leaking out and running down the CV joint on the out side. The other thing to is check the CV Joint, if it's the inside joint. It will not make any clicking noise, just the out side joint where the wheel hub is and when your making a turns is when it makes the clicking noise. The best thing to do is to jack the car up and make sure you use stands to secure it to make sure the car does not comedown on you. Inspect the CV joint, look for excessive play and oil leak from the transmission if any. Good luck and keep me posted, Oh and don't for get to check your transmission fluid level.
