A friend of mine just finished replacing timing belt with tensioner. The car was sitting in the garage during this time, for one week. immediatelly after installation of new timeing belt, loud metal like knocking sound appeared approximately 3-5 minutes after starting. Can be heared only while idling and up to 1200 RPS, THEN IT GOES AWAY. Knocking comes from the middle of the engine, below the manifold intake.

    please help.

Is it lifters, or maybe timing is off.

I use 94 octane gas (Sunoco), 10W40 sythetic oil.

Depending on the period of time and intensity of the knock ? If it is a rapid short ,loud knock then disappears altogether you may be dealing with a cam chain tensioner that is loosing oil pressure when the car is standing. A loose cambelt tensioner can increase the noise .

I had the same problema and it was the cam chain tensioner. It is a rather expensive part and can be done yourself if you are extremely careful to mark your timing before you begin. You can find the part form ECS tuning for around $350.00 but they can go as high as $600.00.

I have the same problem on my 2002 audi A4 1.8T quattro.

After doing much research I have narrowed the causes down to two issues:
It could either be the Hydraulic Valve Lifters
Or
The flywheel (also known as Flexplate) that may be cracked.

It's now a matter of finding a reliable independent mechanic who will check which of these is the issue because the Audi dealership keeps telling me that this is a normal sound. However, I don't see anything normal in a "luxury" turbo car making a racket like a diesel engine would.

Sounds like the hydraulic valve lifters - confirm if noise is from cylinder head (upper part of engine) If so try removing the sump and cleaning the sump and oil pump from carbon sludging. If this does'nt help you will need to replace the lifters.

Audi noise when starting only

Walk away from it. Unless your getting it dirt cheap. Tapping is top end, Head job. Not cheap. Knocking is bottom end. replace the engine.

2001 azteck 49000 miles use very little once every

The 3.4L engine has special pistons that are designed to expand as the engine heats up. When the engine is cold, the pistons make a knocking sound that resembles lifter noise or piston slap. As long as the noise goes away after the engine warms up, don't sweat it; this is normal.

A knocking that starts when engine is cranked then it goes away

The knock is likely a worn connecting rod bearing. Are you using the correct weight of oil, never use any heavier than 10W30W, heavy oil viscosity's cause slow circulation through the oil passages and starve the engine's bearings for oil.

NOISE WHEN COLD THEN GOES AWAY WHEN WARMS UP,SOMEONE SAID MAIN BEARINGS GOING BAD

Hard to say over the internet but I will try to explain. If the noise is a distict KNOCK KNOCK and it sounds like it is coming from the bottom of the engine, then it most likely is a rod or main bearing. If it is a TAP TAP noise that sounds like it's coming from the top of the engine, then most likely a valve lifer is failing/failed.
the fact that it goes away when the car is warm, makes me lean towards a bad lifter. Normaly if a bearing is bad and knocking, the noise doesn't go away.

The KNOCK noise will be somewhat hollow sounding and the TAP TAP sound will be more solid. If the KNOCK KNOCK is solid, then a rod or main bearing has most likely failed to the point that a new/reman engine will be needed.

Experiencing a "ticking" "knocking" type noise when 1st starting the car in colder weather that goes away once the blazer warms up , any help ?? I was told it could be the exhaust manifold , or piston...

it may need a lifter or valve adjustment when cold they will tick or knock depending on how loose or worn out then when it warms up they swell with heast and noise stops. after adjusting or replacing it will stop making noise

It sounds like the hydraulic lifters are bleeding down after sitting for a while... there are ball checks which are supposed to prevent this... Try using a good engine flush (a product that frees sticky lifters) and replace the oil with a good synthetic... Hope this helps...;-)

ThenI start my engine it sounds like diesel and no power

how is the oil level and pressure?, how many miles on engine? is this a loud knock or rather a clatter/ticking noise? knock is engine rod or crankshaft bearings, clatter loud ticking is valve follower noise. how long before it (the noise) goes away?
