Try this re-sync procedure, it is slightly different from the one in the manual...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Synchronization of Transmitter keys:
In order to synchronize the transmitter keys, please perfom the following steps:
- Insert the transmitter into the ignition lock
- Test to see if the transmiter key has been recognized as valid (ATA status indicator lamp)
- Remove the transmitter key from ignition lock
- then within 1 minute. Press and hold the open button and at the same
time press the "close all" button five (5) times. Lastly, press one of
the desired buttons as necessary.
Only after the completed sunchronization process is the remote function of the transmitter possible.
Additionaly, it may be necessary to resynchronize a transmitter key if the transmitter battery has been replaced.

Hope this helps.
I suggest check the right owners manual in this link: 1999 C280 Owner's Manual, but can be applied for most C-Class cars
including AMG Models from 1995-2000 please let me know if you found it
useful (need free register).
Good luck.
