Question about Buick LeSabre

1 Answer

I have a 2000 Buick LeSabre with a 3.8L engine. Engine dies all of a sudden without warning. Let it sit for awhile and engine starts and runs perfectly and then happens again. Mechanic at repair shop is totally baffled as no diagnostic codes come up on his code reader, so he can't pinpoint the exact source. He says it can be one of three things, ignition module, coil pack or MAP sensor but without the proper code, cannot put in the extended warranty claim. Has anyone had this experience with this problem on a Buick.

I had the same problem with my 2000 le sabre custom. It would die in the middle of the interstate. I could throw it into neutral and it would restart and keep on going or I'd have to let it sit for about 5 minutes and it would usually start. There is no code, Dealer said to bring it in when it's happening. Yeah, right..if it's drivable..it's not happening. Replaced the fuel pump twice, the camshaft and crankshaft sensors, but still happened randomly. I had to stop driving the car because it was unsafe.

If the motor gets hot and cuts off and will not start for a period of time the problem would be the crank sensor. The sudden cut off and starting right back up can be due to dirty battery cable connections. Remove them from battery and clean all three of them with a wire brush and replace both bolts.

Hi! The MAF (mass air flow) sensor is surely faulty. The MAF has big contribution on the engine performance specially on the idling an vacuum supply. If the MAF is faulty the rpm will drop eratically or die. Regarding the overheating problem, you may want to check the radiator blower for it may be tripping that sometimes it works and sometimes won't. This can be a good cause. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

Car runs fine just quits

Does this have a "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light on? If so, get the codes pulled and post them back here along with the engine info. If no codes are present then it may well be a bad crankshaft sensor. I have seen many of these give intermittent problems (usually heat related) and do exactly what you have described without setting a code.

Think my friend sounds like your alternator has gone bad on you... Your battery still holds power and enough to run your electronics and starter but not enough power to run your ignition components.

My 1997 buick lesabre runs for awhile then dies. let it set for awhile and it will start back up.

While it is acting up check for spark at the spark plugs. You want to do this after it dies and will not start. If spark is good then check fuel pressure. The fuel pressure should be 48-55 psi with the key on and engine off.Let me know what you find Good luck.
