Not sure about the 12 times one but i know the blinking then staying on and missing then shut it off and changing the sensor and it running ok when you start it.... thats because your catalitic converter is cloged, usually from miss fires or bad/old plugs/wires you need to replace your cat cause its beyond repair and make sure to change your plugs and wires (and i would do my fuel filter and air filter while i was at it if it were me) or else you will have the same problem right around the corner. I know this due to the fact it happened to both my parents cars and when i bought my truck with 103000 miles the guy before me NEVER changed his stuff, (supposed to do plugs and wires at 12000 mile intervales) and it was all factory, Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Check engine light is on and ECU blings 12 times.

you use the button that resets your trip odometer to reset the maintenance light.

with the key in the ignition but not turned on, hold the trip reset button in with one hand. then, while holding the button in, turn the ignition key to the ON position so that the lights on the dash come on.

continue to hold the reset button in and watch the maintenance light. it will take about 15 seconds for the light to go out

when the light goes out, turn the ignition key OFF and then release the trip reset button.

your light will be reset and come on in about another 5000 miles to remind you of the next service

hope that helps

SOURCE: check engine light blinking 10 times

The pcm (powertrain control module ) is telling you it has a set code in the memory. Take the car to a parts place like (auto zone ) and have them to run a scam on the pcm for a trouble code. Once you have done that then you will be able to correct the problem. Hope this will help you.

I started my truck this morning with my command start, worked fine as always, then shut off after the timer expired. I went to start it with the key and it just kept cranking over and wouldn't fire....

Get the manual and check what the flash codes are??
What vehicle is it? What engine? What year?

Wait a second and keep your eye on the check engine light. You should see it start to light up in a series of flashes.

The light is blinking in a simple code of long and short. Long blinks mean "10" and short blinks mean "1".

The light was blinking once for a long time, and then twice for a short time. 10, 1 and 1 is error code 12. Code 12 indicates a problem with my EGR system. This is the system that sends some of the engine's exhaust into the cylinder to cool the combustion process and keep temps in the cylinders down. Having a broken EGR is relatively common on a high mileage car (I have 180,000 miles on mine) and it's a pretty easy fix. I was worried that I might have to pull over to the side of the road when I saw the light or get it to a mechanic ASAP, but now I know that it's not life threatening to the car and that it's OK if I get it looked at the next time I am at my mechanic.

You can find a list of error codes for the make and model of your car online by doing a simple search. The ones for Honda are included below.

94 olds cutlass ciera service engine soon just came on what should i do

If the service engine light is on, this is in a way a good thing. This means that your vehicles computer has detected a problem and the computer has stored this information for you. Now the trick is how to get that information from an older system like you have (they changed the system in late 1996). You need to find the data link connector which should be under the dash on the drivers side of the vehicle and I believe yours (don't quote me on this) is on the right side of the steering column by the brake pedal or even mounted on the bottom of the dash (same area though). Below is a picture of what this data link plug looks like. Now have a peice of paper and a pen also a paper clip (one of the bigger ones are better. Now take that paper clip and kind of bend it into a "U" and insert one end into the letter "A" spot on the plug and the other end in the "B" spot on the data link plug. After you "jump" A and B turn your ignition switch to the on position without starting the vehicle and look at your check engine light.. Here is where the pen and paper come in. The check engine light should start blinking. The begining or starting blinks should goes as "blink" (one blink) - Pause - and the "blink blink" (2 blinks). This is a code 12. A code 12 means the system is working. It will blink a code 12 three times. After the code 12 there will be a litttle longer pause and then another code(s) should start. this is where the counting comes in. so after the code 12 and the pause, if it blinks 4 times - pause and then 2 times, this is a code 42 ( am using a code 42 just as an example). It will blink the code 42 (or whatever code) 3 times and then move on to the next code. There may only be one code but if there is more they will go in order. When it goes back to a code 12, the diagnostic is complete. Write down what codes you retrieved and these codes will lead you to the direction of the problem and there are testing procedures that go with each code. Until I get those codes, I am unable to help you any further. Once you get code(s) you can reply/comment here what they are or feel free to email me directly at with your vehicle information (make, model, year and engine size) and I will be happy to try and help you diagnose what the problem is such as a sensor or whatever along with tesing procedures so you're not just replacing parts that are not needed. I know this was a long explanation but it's the only thing to be done at this point. Hope I was able to explain it to you so you understand and I was able to help.

My car wont stay idling

Lets start with figuring out why the check engine light is on. You can get a blinkout of the the code by switching you key to the on and off position three times quickly and leaving it in the on position on the final time (note, do not take the key so far that it tries to start the engine). So start with the key in, and engine off, quickly turn the key to on, then off, then on, then off, then on and leave it there. Now watch your check engine light. It will blink out any codes that may be stored. The blinking will have breaks between each code and each code is a two digit number. For instance, blink short pause, blink blink, long pause, blink, blink, blink, pause, blink, blink, would be codes 12 and 32. I believe the final code is 55 and just simply means "end of codes". That should at least tell you if its an issue the ECU has detected. You can do a quick google search to find out what each code it spits out means. As for a guess as to why it isn't idling...I've seen everything from a failing fuel pump (inadequate pressure), to a clogged EGR valve cause this. Could be quite a few things unfortunately. Good luck!

Service engine light comes on , what kind of scaner is needed

you can use a standard scanner with a adapter or you need a paperclip. You find the diag connector under the driver dash board. If you put the paper clip from A to B and turn the ignotion on (dont start the car) and watch the check engine light. The light will blink a code three times and then move to the next code if there is any. It will blink like so for example if the code is 12 it will blink once pause then blink twice and repeat three times. It will then display any other codes. Remember that it will show each code three times before moving to the next code. You can research the codes online, at any autozone or post them here and I will tell you what the meanings are and try to give you a course of action to follow.

How can i check the code for the check engine light without using a meter. I hear there is a way to check the number of times the check engine light blinks with a manual procedure. I have the codes just...

Turn the ignition switch on off on off on off on. After the third time the check engine light should start blinking codes. It will start with 12. That is the start of codes code. It will end with 55. That is the end of codes code. You just want to know what codes are inbetween 12 and 55

No power on acceleration starts hard only runs in gear when pumping throttle no scanner available

You need to cross out the two terminals in the ald connector for a code.It will be either the top left hand terminals,or the bottom right two terminals, according to witch way the ald connector is mounted. It is under the dash,on drivers side, about where your knees are. With key on,and these two terminals connected to one another, the check engine light will blink,it will blink one,,,,one, two,,,,,one,,,,one ,two, one,,,,,one, two,,three times, this is code 12,,the one,,,,then the one, two,is 12,after it blinks 12 three times,it will be giving you a code the very next set of numbers,so be ready and wright it down,it will blink the code three times, and then if there is another code,it will blink next, and so on.When all the codes are read out,it will go back to one,,,,,one, two,,code 12.These codes are avail;able on the internet, just type in code list for 93 grande prix. When you put the correct two terminals together, the cooling fan most likely will come on,this is normal. The key has to be turn to on.If you connect the wrong two terminals together, nothing will happen, just connect the other two terminals I mentioned, let me know if this was helpful.

I have a 95 gmc 350 half ton and my check engine light comes on when I am on the highway and goes off when I drive at lower speeds. I am also getting poor gas mileage.

Most likely a bad egr valve. Take a paper clip. Jump pins A to B at the 12 pin diagnostic connector. (Top right pair wires in the connector - or - Lower left pair of wires depending on orientation) Turn key on. Count the "blinks" of the check engine light. All codes are 2-digit. Short blinks are the ones digit and long blinks are the tens digit. EACH CODE REPEATS 3 TIMES AND THE GOES TO THE NEXT CODE SET. You will get code "12" first..."b l i n k- blink-blink" It will repeat 3 times. I bet the next code will be "32" EGR system malfunction
