I have a 96, and no, you do not have to but you should for a couple of reasons-the electrical demands of the compressor running are very high, and the sensors for the leveling system are sensitive enough that moving while they are trying to set your trim hight would be something to consider. While on the subject, you should try to find spares of these items-VCRM's (is a relay module that controls the fuel pump, cooling fan and other important components). Look for a spare set of IMRC's (left and right they open and close the secondary intake runners) the ones on a 96 are unique to that year. A spare computer is also not a bad thing to have, since there are no other ECU's from any other year (or car), period.
