Question about 1996 Pontiac Grand Am
I have a 1996 grand am with a v6 3.1L engine and it wont turn over or make a sound period. its most likely something electrical. i checked the starter motor, it has a new battery but still wont start. the dashboard and interior lights come on plus the radio turns on also. the starter is not the original but the car run before i bought it. i drove it home after i bought it but once i parked it and turned it off it hasnt started since. my altornater is good because my car didnt shut off on the 30 min car ride home. also all the fuses are good. i think it may be the solenoid or starter. if u could help me it would be great cuz im only 16 and i dont have enough to pay various mechanics to research my car.
This advise is terrible. The adviser didn't read the problem very well. If they had they would have noticed that everything was working electronically. I'm going through the same problem now and the general consensus is that it is a computer problem with the factory theft system. Factory theft, not dealership or aftermarket. I was told by a mechanic buddy of mine that he read about a wire to or from the computer that if cut, would disable some of these problems, but I have yet to find anything regarding that on line.

If the car doesnt make a sound when trying to start it. it can be a possibility it is your alternador. the reason why it didnt shut off on you while you were driving was you were most likely driving off of your battery and not the alternador. I have the same exact car and i been thru hell and back and then back to hell with it. I had a problem where my alternador wasnt charging the battery so after driving for about 30 mins the car shut off. I got a new alternador and my battery light came on. i was able to drive it. (i also had a brand new battery). I took it to a shop to see what was wrong and the alternador wasnt charging up the battery, So in other words i was using the battery to drive. And if you are driving using the power of your batter only, it is very important you do not use anything that would help use it, such as radio, windsheild wipers or even your head lights (and i know yours come on automatically), if ur windows are powered used, try not to keep rolling them up or down. and it is very possible to drive off of the battery if you are not using any other power used things in the car. And if its not your alternador than most def its an electric problem (i had one of those too)
