Question about 1999 Ford Contour

1 Answer

Fuel Pump ????

Car won't start after a shut it off for 10 mins. or so. Cranks but won't start. Seems to be intermittent problem. (happened last week 1 time and after an hour or so it started. Fine all week - just happened again). What could be causing this? I have a full tank of gas and fuel pump switch did not pop.

The car ran just fine when I parked it and when I started it up today it ran rough then died and won't start. It cranks just fine but I don't here the fuel pump or smell gas at all. Could it be a relay, fuse or something simple? I don,t have an owners manual to find out what fuses or relay are for what nor do I have a repair manual. I don't have the money for a garage to look at it and I,m sure I can fix it if I can troubleshoot it. The car is a 2004 ford contour 4 cylinder.

Some of you have replaced parts without testing them Most have no reference material so you can't learn a system or test it so your done before you start You get the manuals, good factory ones not generic haynes manuals & also study OBD2 Systems on the internet 30 % of your time should be education & the rest testing You only replace a part if you find a problem or a part tests bad You have to know how that part works just to test it

When they don't start you have to think old school mechanical issues timing belt & more You need to check fuel pressure & the pump only runs for 4 seconds if it does not see ignition spark or injector pulse Without thoses you need no fuel & given fuel & no spark you lock up a motor as you can not compress a liquid

Fuel pressure regulators sleodm fail according to my local lincoln dealer They only sold or installed 4 in the last 6 years out of the parts dept & across new & used vehicles I asked that question about a year ago as we get that here & you have to be able to test it

Things can be simple but not seen that way when you don't know what to do yourself

You have the battery tested for free at parts store,it should have 12,6 volts or more or you have to charge it That can shut down computer module voltage Any loose or corroded battery cables, corroded & loose ground wires & at top of fuel tank you can have just corrosion on the wires & no need for any parts

A 1999 vehicle has a lot of dirt & dust ,water intrusion, wire corrosion, poor grounding that comes with age,so simple ,yes,go find it

Not likely a fuse those you can check
If a fuse blows you don't replace it only
to blow again, you find out why

Relays should last for 25 years & you can
switch them with other to check that

The fuel pump siezes mechanically or electrically
& that can go on for 6 months so check fuel pressure
at the motor with a gauge

Also there are at least 3 other tests that have to be done at
a repair shop with the correct tools

SOURCE: Car ran good for 30

I had the same problem took me a year to solve it. If its hot or very warm outside when it does it, it is your FUEL PUMP. It is going in and out. It will run good for about 30 mins than such down for about 20mins and if it is hot it will take longer to cool down.

It appears you may have a bad ignition coil that cuts out after it gets hot. Not uncommon.

2003 Pontia Grand Am cranks but won't start

You basically had a intermittent problem,If anything it probably was not the fuel pump, In order for the fuel pump to turn on the ECM, needs to see a crank value, of 250 RPM or the fuel pump will not turn on, what gives this it is the crank sensor,The crank sensor does age and when it goes out you can be driving down the freeway and all of a sudden the car stalls, and it doesnt start up,12_26_2012_5_26_02_am.jpg

Car not starting - Intermittent

intermitten problems are the worse, when it wont start check fuel pressure with a gauge, and then check for spark, i have spent days on problems such as this, what you have to find is what is missing, fuel ,spark, is maybe coolant leaking into one or more cyls, i have seen air in the fuel system that only cause problems when under hood temp is high, open the hood and it cools enough to to start, hope this helps

Fuel pressure intermittently drops causing sputter and die.

check for 12v constant at your fuel pump if you are not getting that replace your relay.
if you are getting 12 volts at your fuel pump the fuel pump is possible to run tuel it gets warm then shut down to a lower rpm I would then replace the fuel pump

1995 Town Car cranks but won't start, intermittent problem

First, try swapping the eec relay with a known good unit and see if the problem persists.
Second, you could be experiencing a problem with your ignition module overheating, causing high resistance in the circuit. When the vehicle sits for a while, the circuit cools and will allow the current to flow again.

Car cranks, but hesitates to start after sitting for over 24hrs

Tune ups are always a good place to start , including air, fuel, plugs and for the extra 5 bucks a PCV valve. If these havn't been done in the last year at least might want to start there. If that doesnt make any difference please post again and we will look at something else!
