Question about 2001 Subaru Forester

1 Answer

Interior rearview mirror anti-glare failure

'01 with compass/antiglare mirror. I must have pressed the antiglare to off a while back, because it wasn't working and I never bothered to investigate it. Today, after car sat outdoors in the heat at the dealer's for other repairs, the antiglare surface showed up on most of the mirror excepting a silver glob on the upper part. The view is distorted and murky in the daylight. Can this be reversed, or must I replace what is likely an expensive item?

I also had the same problem, coincidentally with a 2001 Subaru Forester when I took it in to the dealer for its 60,000 mile service. I told the dealer I find it VERY ODD that this problem would appear exactly on the same day I took it in for service, being that I've had the car for over 8 years. The odds of that happening are 1 in 3000 (about 3000 days in 8 years). Either the mirror was damaged during service, or it was swapped for parts by some less than ethical service person. The dealer denied both charges but they have agreed to replace it for 1/2 cost of the part. The installation will be done at their expense. Either way, I don't think I will take my car back in for service and I will be watching them like a hawk when they replace the mirror.  I would be interested in finding out what dealer you took yours into.

I just bought a 2001 Forester & the rearview mirrow looks strange. Silver at the top, sort of murky on the lower 3/4. How much is the mirror? Is it hard to replace yourself?

I have the same, quirky problem with my '01 Forrester's rearview mirror. These little annoyances are making me rethink my plan to drive Subaru forever... the mirror, the security system, and the clock! Ouch! Are these coincidentces, or is my car falling apart?

Same thing - brown on the bottom 2/3 of the mirror, working at top. Nothing to do with taking it in for service, and I've seen posts that this happens to auto-dimming mirrors. I bought a replacement Gentex for a lot less than what Subaru wants.

Exactly the same problem with my 01 Forester! (2001 was apparently a bad year for mirrors.) I was told that the anti-glare stuff was leaking; that's why it doesn't extend to the top of the mirror. Don't really want to pay Subaru prices for a new mirror though - any alternatives?

01 Subaru Outback; oily liquid cover 98% of the mirror, so that it's difficult to use in the daylight.

It has a compass that I use, so I'm not ready to rip it off the windshield yet -- and I'm too cheap to fix it.

This is why the big 3 US makers failed. It's the little continuous problems with no manufacturer taking responsibility.

I'll buy Toyota or Honda next time.

Problem experienced w/2001 OB Wagon. The 'mirror' w/auto adjusting for anti-glare is actually an LCD. When they go 'murky' it is the LCD layers delaminating. Not repairable -- remove and replace.

How to do I get the compass and temperature gauge to work in the rear view mirror again. Directions are NW and SE all the time

Calibrate the compass built into the upper-right corner of the rearview mirror by holding the compass button (an "N" with two crossing lines) until your zone number appears. Determine your zone number by looking at the map in the owner's manual. Press the compass button until a "C" appears. Then drive in a circle three times at 5 mph or less in an uncongested area. The compass will automatically orient as a result of the circling.

2002 impala water dripping from panel where moon roof switch is, compass, fuel mpg info.

It is going to be the seal in your moon roof. Unless you have holes in the top of your car you can be sure that the water is coming from there.

The airbag light stays on and the temperature and compass display on the rearview mirror won't work.

2003 Chevy Silverado
our rearview mirror has gone off and the airbag light stays on.
i've determined that this is a fuse, the SIR fuse under the hood, but what I can't figure out is why it's blowing.
It's either something to do with when we hook up the lights to the trailer or it might be from where we installed a new car stereo.
I took it to the Chevy dealer for some other things and told them there was a fuse blown to the rearview mirror and to the airbag and just asked them to replace the fuse while it was in the shop.
on top of the $700 i was already spending, they charged me $98 to diagnose that it was a blown fuse and like $11 to change it, even though I already told them it was the airbag fuse. Highway robbery. And they wonder why we don't like 'em.

The interior rear view mirror has temperature and compass displays, but only work for a short time at start- up.I have tried unplugging the harness on the back of the mirror and cleaning contacts. It`s...

Temperature Display
The inside rearview mirror supplies a 5 volt signal circuit and low reference circuit to the ambient air temperature sensor. The inside rearview mirror monitors and records the voltage on the signal circuit of the ambient air temperature sensor. The inside rearview mirror uses this recorded voltage to display the temperature on the temperature display portion of the compass/temperature display. The temperature display will show "ICE" when the ignition is first turned on and the current temperature is 3°C (37°F) or below. The display will toggle between "ICE" and the actual outside temperature for approximately 4 minutes.
The mirror will display "OC" if the mirror senses a temperature of less than -40°C (-40°F).
the mirror will display a "SC" if the mirror senses a temperature of greater than 112°C (143°F).

Replace the inside rearview mirror with compass. Refer to Inside Rearview Mirror Replacement .

Custom Rear view mirror

Hiya...ALL factory-installed rearview mirrors are installed with different wires due to options.
About 6 different rearview mirrors are installed with those options such as On-Star, light, compass, and those features which use different wires....THIS CANNOT be modified with different rearview mirror....**for example, the Equinox owner attempt to pull out a factory-installed base rearview mirror and put in different one that has compass/temperature built into the rearview mirror**

However, the wires are located inside the front headliner which requires removing the sunvisor (and possible removal of interior plastic trim part at the left/right ends of the windshield) prior to pull the headliner down, and a small metal philips or torx screw is used to secure the rearview mirror onto the bracket glued to the windshield.

The best solution is to leave the original factory-installed rearview mirror in place.
