Question about 2000 Volvo V40

Volvo v40 steering squeal

1998 v40 1.8i 39000miles

i have a strange noise coming from the front of the vehicle (sounds like brake squeal)
it only occurs when i steer right at a constant slow speed (30mph)
if i steer left or straight i get no noise
have lifted the bonnet and turned the steering and revved the engine to try and recreate it- no joy!
it only happens when the car is moving, also if i brake or accellerate the noise goes away immediately
have checked the discs and pads and they are fine!

could it be simply brake squeal (seems odd only in one direction tho)
or something more sinister?

checked the power steering belt and pulley condition before i posted and found it to be ok

  • lozccw Jul 25, 2008

the power steering pump and alternator both run off the same belt, but if it was a belt problem surely there would be a noise everytime i turned the steering or revved the engine as the belt/pulleys spin faster in relation to the engine revs, and when the steering wheel is turned in either direction not just when i turn right?

Hi,

May I offer an alternative possibility....

If it sounds like a brake squeal then it must be brake related.

Perhaps your best bet would be to discuss your concern with Volvo UK service/Authorized repairer or any Volvo parts suppliers such as:

You may want to inquire about brake shim, dampers and anti-squeal compound. That is even if you are considering of doing the repairs yourself.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

The whining/groaning/growling sound could be any one of the belt-driven rotating elements (water pump, power steering pump, alternator, A/C compressor). With the hood up and the engine running, listen carefully and see if your two ears can direct you to the sound. If that doesn't work, you might have to remove each belt, one at a time, and see if the sound goes away and when. Or you could get a long, small diameter rubber hose, using it as a stethoscope to listen for unusual noise with the engine running. Be sure not to get any part of your body near the spinning pulleys and belts.

Could be also a pulley bearing worn, you're sure it's the PS and not the alternator?

The velocity joint is going bad, you will need to have it replaced, eventually it will become a crackling sound and get really annoying.. But no need to worry it wont just fall out or break you can still use the car as is, but eventually it will shell and and the cup will pop. but Before this happens the noise will be really annoying, as soon as it get that way have it replaced..

it aint a beering, or it would have been maink noise constantly, and it it the steering rack or it would have had some rough tremours on the steering

  • Rishi Roshan Ali Jul 25, 2008

    CHECK YOUR VELOCITY JOINT,,

1.) turn the steering all the way to the right then slowel axcellerate..

    2.) stop the slowel reverse

3.)turn the steering all the way to the left then slowel axcellerate..

    4.) stop the slowel reverse

If its one of the joints you will hear the sound there,,

YOu can have a look at the boot rubber to ensure its secure or if its untied, its if untied you can add some greese(a lot of greese) in the cup by pulling the boot rubber back a bit. Pack enoug greese until its slipping out of the cup, secure the boot rubber back using a tie strap and that may help..

  • Rishi Roshan Ali Jul 25, 2008

The velocity join connectes the tires to the engine and turns when you turn, there is a slug and bearing type mechanism that allows this if this os work or the bearings shelled or the slugs peeled this this can cuase your problem.

Obviously you have an alignment problem - but this can be caused by
several different suspension parts. Check the lower ball joints and the
rack-rod ends. These have rubber seals on them. If these seals are torn
they will have to be replaced.
Also check the condition of the
rubber boots on the steering rack. If the components are O.K. then you
can check the alignment crudely with 2 planks of wood against each
front tyre. The toe-in should be about 1/16" -1/8" using this method.
If it's off, turn the steering wheel so it's straight ahead and find
out which wheel is out of alignment. Slacken the locknut on the track
rod of the offending wheel and turn the track rod until the wheels come
back into alignment. Then secure the track-rod locking nut. This should
make it steer better and improve tyre wear but it's no substitute for a
    professional alignment.

If high pitched noise happens when you turn the steering wheel then look to the power-steering belt.

There are two belts that makes squealing noise, high pitch squeel usually comes from the serpentine belt , the main belt that runs around alternator, water pum etc.

If the noise happens when you turn the steering
wheel then look also to the power-steering belt.
To fix it you put in tension the belt by moving the gear than sustains the belt, or replace the belt if it is in bad shape.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Jul 25, 2008

Fast rater, well ask to others...

  • Ginko
    Ginko Jul 25, 2008

Check also the wheel bearing, they make noise when you move steering wheel , and if it is a brake, and is scratching when you does not brake then you have a broken pad, brakes locked up or something similar, when is like that you always find some brake resistance in moviing car when in neutral, best test is putting on the bridge or lift and spinning wheel with your hands.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Jul 25, 2008

One more thing, checking power steering belt and pulley condition at a glance does mean nothing, is belt is slightly low on tension it well squeal even if it looks perfect, same for serpentine belt.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Jul 25, 2008

And when is the velocity joint the noise will come from the distributor area, you will hear it, and usually is continuous, and rather rattling than squealing.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Jul 25, 2008

As it always happens at constant speed seem to be rather coming from a belt, as you brake or accelerate the belt re-gains grip and the noise quits, that is quite common.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Jul 25, 2008

If it is a bearing it wont make noise when car is not moving. If the noise is when steering try to understand if noise comes from wheels.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Jul 25, 2008

If you already know why ask? you refused us all, you seem to know already
You said: "if it was a belt problem surely there would be a noise everytime i
turned the steering or revved the engine as the belt/pulleys spin
faster in relation to the engine revs"
It does not work like that, the serpentine belt can squel at different times for different reasons ( it loses grip because otr accelerating, when staying a while on same rpm, when braking, wet , oil on top), generally it squeal when it is losing grip.
You have to hear it yourself with trunk open.
    .

  • Ginko
    Ginko Jul 25, 2008

By the way, if it happens only when the steering wheel is turned in one direction(not necessarily in either direction), then is unlikely it is a problem with the serpentine belt, (that is the one that runs on alternator etc. ), when is like that is power steering belt.
You need to hear the noise and to find out where it comes from, if it is from wheel it is probably a wheel bearing.
Noises from bearings, as suggested from a valid expert and belts are not a very urgent matter, but they should be fixed at a garage when you have some time.
I saw you rewarded a "an alignment problem" solution, ast that expert , and keep to troubleshooting with that expert, after all you are paying him for this help..... if you think that he has got the solution.
Sorry for being rude, but I feel I am wasting my time here.

regards and thanks for using Fixya

  • Ginko
    Ginko Jul 25, 2008

The velocity join making noise is more difficult to find out, if it is velocity join remember to accept Darklord1 solution.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Jul 25, 2008

If it is the serpentine (alternator) belt you understand immediately, just by listening at it from inside trunk. If it squeasl when turning wheel and car is not moving, it should not be serpentine, it is usually steering belt. Also cam belt or cam chain can make similar noise, in this case the noise should came from near the head.
Noise from brakes (pads, bent disk etc.) usually comes on only when braking, if they are on all the time you can feel you brakes are not OK.
Sometimes I have seen noise from brakes when steering, it was due to a broken pad, and is easy to confund this with bearing noise. wheel bearing and brakes noises come from wheels.
If the power steering belt is cause for the noise , it is not necessarily in need of replacement. Often the Pump pulley must be pulled to put belt in tension, sometimes the pump braket is worn or deformed and need replacement.
    Check

    Steering

I have a strange, intermittent squealing noise coming from the driver's side front. It sounds like it's coming from the tire, and when I put on the brakes it seems to affect it.

That sounds like the wear indicators are causing the squealing. They are a small piece of metal attatched to the brake pad, that when the pads wear down to a certain point, they began to touch the rotor when the brakes are applied and make a squealing noise to let you know you should check/replace your brake pads.

My volvo v40 is making a grinding/scraping noise especially when turning. what is the most likely cause of this fault?

It sounds like you have a stone lodged in one of your wheels. They can lodge themselves between the brakes and backing plate
.Possible solution ,try reversing and slam on the brakes .This has worked for me several times. Good luck

When i turn the wheel too far to the left or right the car makes a strange noise. when i brake period the car makes a strange noise. when i am doing 45 mph and up when i start to brake the car starts to...

Well, short of hurting your feelings.

When you brake you hear a strange noise. The sounds brakes may make, should be something you are familair with.

When doing 45 mph plus, the car starts to shake. Now tell me, youv'e not experienced this many times in your life!

Turning left or right could be a worn steering rack, mostly because you never change power steering fluid,or upper strut bearings or any other suspension parts starting to wear. Or, it's just you noticing different sounds, than when it was new.

When you turn the wheel too far to either side, you hear the power steering pump squealing and telling you to stop. Another bad practice.

Now I would conclude, that you need to strip all four brakes off the vehicle and completely go through some sort of brake repair or service. I hope you already figured that.

How often should the Brake discs be replaced

Only when the light comes on to let you know that the time for replacement is coming up.
Or when the brakes start to viberate and the pedal goes up and down slightly and the steering you can feel a wobble .
OR when you hear a bad grinding noise back or front.. other wise it depends on weather you drive in town work or open road long trips
Town about 100.000km
Open roads long trips 180,000km as it all depends on how often you use your brakes and how fast you drive to how hard you brake.
