2 fixes:

1. buy a PMD 6' cable extention and mount pmd inder your dash with a heat sync. on eBay.

2. buy a newly designed PMD like this on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/New-improved-PMD-6-5L-6-5-chevrolet-black-box-driver_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1205Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1308Q7c301Q3a1Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem330314039974QQitemZ330314039974QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories
and this should be the last, especially if you do both 1 and 2

these US made PMDs have much higher rated diodes. The real culprit.

Good day.
You can try to remove the PMD fron the pump and mount it on a pmd cooler away from the heat, it may help.

Recently another company has come out with a PMD that can withstand a much higher amount of heat. It is the heat from out big 6.5's that cause these to fail. Also my mechanic put on a steel adapter and moved it away from the standard location. Since I have placed this new one one, that I might mention did not cost any extra, it has not failed. (Crossing my fingers).

The stock manufacturer of the PMD is Stanadyne, it is not made by this company. Sorry I can not remember the manufacturer right now, but it should be that hard to find.

Checked Manual: 1996 chevrolet 3500 6.5 turbo. What is a(PMD)? manual doesnt list it.

Common Problems:
Pump Mounted Driver: Relates to thermal failures. The PMD is screwed to the DS-4 injection pump on the 1994-2001 GM 6.5 diesel utilizing fuel flow to dissipate heat. The injection pump is mounted in the intake valley (a high heat area). The PMD contains two power transistors that should be cooled by proper contact with the injection pump body. If the pump is not precisely machined to make complete contact with the transistors via the silicone thermal gasket and paste, the PMD is improperly installed without the gasket or paste, the PMD is installed off center with the pump body, or corrosion develops on the mounting surface the PMD will overheat. Several companies manufacture an extension harness and heat-sink kits. These allow an owner or their mechanic to relocate the PMD away from the injection pump to a lower heat environment and/or a place that can get more air flow.

1994 6.5l turbo diesel, When idling in park or in nuteral engine will just shutoff all by itself after a few minutes. What could be causing this.

Probably the PMD is bad.. Suggest getting a cooler and wiring harness kit with a new PMD. Fix> Locate the PMD cooler in front of the grill and most of your stalling problems can be solved.

1995 CHEVY 1500 6.5 TD NO START CRANKS OVER FINE DTC CODE #35 NEED TROUBLE TREE FOR NO START CODES

Found this online: GM Technical Service Bulletin #77-63-06Ab states that: "stalling, hard starting, and hesitation are symptoms of a failing PMD (Pump Mounted Driver) module." These symptoms usually (but not always) set a code 35 or 36 in the 1994 - 1995 models, or a code 1216 in the 1996 - up models. Often when this problem is diagnosed at a dealership or repair shop, the customer is told that the injection pump needs to be replaced. But in most cases, the PMD module can simply be replaced for a fraction of the price. ds4chevyfsd.jpgThe PMD module, (also referred to as the "Fuel Solonoid Driver") has been a major problem for Chevy / GMC 6.5L diesel owners since the introduction of the 6.5L electronically controlled DS4 fuel injection pump. It has been determined that heat is the primary cause of PMD failures. The PMD is mounted to the side of the fuel injection pump from the factory. But the injection pump does not provide adequate cooling to keep the PMD functional. Once the engine begins showing symptoms of hesitating, stalling and hard starting, the problem will only worsen with time. The problem only becomes more serious when considering the potential danger of your engine stalling in a situation such as pulling into heavy traffic or descending a steep hill and losing the use of power brakes and steering.

Hope this helps!

Can't find the fuel injector driver on a 2000 6.5 turbo diesel engine. Need help please!

The PMD (pump mounted Drive) or FSD (Fuel Solenoid Driver) is mounted to the right side of the Injection Pump when standing infront of the vehicle looking at the engine. It is black and about the size of a pack of cards.
