1997 Mercury Cougar XR7 Logo
Anonymous Posted on Feb 15, 2011

I have a 97 merc cougar xr7 4.6 v8 I had a weird vibrating hesitation while accelerating thru the gears. It feels like it's almost running on 7 cylinders. I opened the hood and manually reved the engine and I got a small backfire. Any ideas what I'm dealing with here??

I've been telling people exhaust leak for their problems all night... and you know what... i think it's an exhaust leak =)

seriously check everything from the block to the manifold and look for anything not connected. If you can smell strong exhaust under the hood as opposed to standing behind the car, or if your air filter get dirty incredibly fast, or if your performance degrades (generally cuz i know cars are touchy and weird) as your foot pushes on the gas (not necessarily higher rpm, but actually burning more gas) particularly when it gets hot, that really might be it.

My similar problem turned out to be a bad spark plug wire. Cheap and easy to replace.

Vibration when accelerating

A vibration when accelerating is almost always related to drive train. Check the U-joints to make certain that the bolts are in place and snug. If so, then pull the axle and manipulate them, just don't let a caps fall off. If it does, you will probably have to replace the joint.

Sounds like a vacuume leak, use some carb cleaner in a spray can and gently spray the engine. When you find the leak the engine will stumble, check in that area for the leak.

You have a hesitation. A hesitation is cause be either:
1. bad spark plug
2. bad spark plug wire
3. bad or leaky or plugged injector
4. timing is off
5. leaky vacuum hose
