Engine overheating, from 180 - 210 degrees in just a few minutes. The smell of overheating was obvious. Not doing ANY unusual driving, just going from one part of town to another in 50 degree weather. Had it towed in to a repair shop. It did not overheat for them. The said this is common problem for the year/model and that we need to replace the entire overflow assembly and the cap. Around $250. Wassup?

these have no radiator cap everything flows straight to the overflow. there is a good chance just the overflow container is leaking. these years did not have an overflow that could hold the pressure of the system. it is a very common problem for cherokees up to 1991 when the system was revamped

check the cap to make sure its not leaking. a new overflow resevoir is only about 40 dollars at baxters auto parts

You should replace the thermostat first as it may be sticking. If no difference then change the radiator cap as it may not be opening to allow coolant to flow to the overflow reservoir. Also make sure there is nothing blocking the overflow tube or tube connections.

Why did the motor die while I was driving down the road when I turned on the a/c and fan?

If the engine overheated then the antifreeze may be getting into the engine, indicating a cracked head or block. check for water in oil via dipstick. .

No, you can't add too much coolant. Rather, it does not hurt anything if you do. Did you add it to the radiator, or to the overflow tank?

Let it cool, then remove the radiator cap, and if needed, add coolant to the radiator. Put the cap back on, and fill the overflow tank to the "full - cold" line. Start it and run it a few minutes and look for leaks. If you find no leaks, drive it for a day or two, then let it cool and check it again. If it is down a lot (without overheating), you have a leak somewhere. If you lose enough coolant, that will make it overheat. However, if it overheats, that can cause loss of coolant, when you stop the car, you will see steam and smell coolant, and often hear it boiling.

If it overheats again, make note of when it happens: driving on the highway, or stop-and-go around town. Overheating on the highway usually indicates a clogged radiator, while in-town overheating usually indicates a bad cooling fan (you don't need the fan above about 30 MPH). A bad fan is usually the fan relay, but it can be the fan thermostat (different from the engine thermostat), or a bad fan motor.

Alternator/selenoid or electrical problem?

When your car is warm, everything is at its maximum expansion. Sounds like an overheating issue. But again I am not there to inspect and diagnose it. It could be several things. Winter driving keeps your engine way cooler than summer heat

Burning smell like clutch or brake coming from engine bay of 96 civic si. SRS ABS and check engine lights on. Car drives normal with higher than normal idle

most likely brakes. ABS pump probably bad or circuit is out.

You can have engine codes scanner to be sure.
