Question about 1996 Oldsmobile Achieva

Security system my key wouldn't ture either direction unless i pressed a plunger inside the column took it to a shop and had the air bag module replaced and the instrument cluster, which fixed the problem. last night my alternator went out i haven't replaced it yet but i have the same problem again with the key not turning. same mechanic told me that i need to reset the security system, i'm looking for the procedure to do this, if you have it, can i ? or where can i find it?

    I can turn the key and the engine starts, but shuts off and the security light flashes. I have repaced the instrament cluster, ignition key, and a mechanic did someith with the passenger air bag and the car worked for a week. I have a Chilton repair manual and it says nothing abou the security system. Anyone have any ideas?

    i have the same problem is this common in this kind of car? the shop told me it would be 800 to fix it to have the panel cluster and security sensor sent in and rebuild.

Most of the time the ignition switch is bad to reset the computer bump your starter and let the car sit with the ignition on for aprox 10 minutes or until the securety light stops flashing and the car should run the car willnot run if the securety light is flashing

How to remove the steering wheel for replacement

Many service procedures require the air bag system to be disabled to prevent accidental deployment. The air bag system can maintain sufficient voltage to cause deployment for up to 2 minutes after the ignition switch is turned off, the battery ground cable is disconnected or the DERM fuse is removed. If the inflator module is disconnected from the deployment loop by the following procedure, service can begin immediately without waiting for the 2 minute time period to elapse.
  1. Turn steering wheel so that vehicle wheels are pointed straight ahead.
  2. Turn ignition switch to Lock position and remove key.
  3. Remove air bag fuse from fuse block.
  4. Remove steering column filler panel.
  5. Remove Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and disconnect yellow two-way connector at base of steering column, Fig. 1.
  1. Remove air bag fuse from fuse block.
Driver Side
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK and remove key.
  2. Connect yellow two-way connector and install connector position assurance (CPA).
  3. Install steering column filler panel.
  4. Insert air bag fuse into fuse block.
  5. Turn ignition switch to RUN and verify that the air bag warning lamp flashes seven times then turns off.
Passenger Side
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK and remove key.
  2. Insert air bag fuse into fuse block.
  3. Turn ignition switch to RUN and verify that the air bag warning lamp flashes seven times then turns off.

Hi, i have 1991 mazda protege. I accidentally broke my key in the ignition lock and now i was wondering how do you take off the ignition lock cylinder? p.s key was pretty worn down already

Some models covered by this manual may be equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described in Section 6. The ignition lock is an integral component of the steering lock mechanism. If the ignition lock must be replaced, perform the following procedure.   1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Properly disarm the air bag system.
  3. Remove the rear console box, brake boot and center panel (disconnect the harness connectors).
  4. Remove the rear console.
  5. Remove the undercover, glove compartment and compartment cover.
  6. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers.
  7. Tilt the steering shaft down. Remove the cap and panel light control switch. Remove the meter hood mounting screws. Pull the meter hood forward to disengage the clips.
  8. Remove the instrument cluster,
  9. Remove the drivers side air bag and the steering wheel.
  10. Remove the combination switch.
  11. Remove the passenger side air bag mounting bolts, electrical connector and remove the air bag module.
  12. Remove the hood panel release lever. Pull the side panel forward to disengage the clips, remove the side panel.
  13. Remove the side covers.
  14. Remove the dashboard mounting bolts, pull the dashboard up and forward and remove.
  15. Remove the steering shaft.
  16. Remove the screw and the ignition switch and disconnect the ignition switch connector.
  17. Using a chisel and a hammer make a groove in the heads of the steering lock mounting bolts. Remove the bolts and the steering lock assembly. To install:
  18. Install the steering lock mechanism to the steering column jacket. Make sure that the lock operates correctly. Install new mounting bolts and tighten the bolts till the heads break off.
  19. Reconnect the ignition switch connector to the ignition switch and install the ignition switch to the steering lock mechanism with the screw.
  20. Replace the dashboard close to its mounts and connect all harness connectors. Install all mounting bolts. Torque to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm).
  21. Install the side covers.
  22. Instal the side panels.
  23. Install the steering shaft and torque the mounting bolts to 12-16 ft. lbs. (16-22 Nm).
  24. Connect the passenger side air bag module electrical connector and replace the module to the dash and install the mounting bolts.
  25. Install the combination switch on the steering column.
  26. Install the steering wheel and drivers side air bag module.
  27. Install the instrument cluster.
  28. Install the meter hood.
  29. Install the upper and lower steering column covers.
  30. Install the glove compartment cover, compartment and the undercover.
  31. Install the rear console, bracket, center panel, brake lever boot and the rear console box.
  32. Reconnect the negative battery cable,
  33. Place the steering column securely on a workbench. Use a chisel and hammer to make slots in the head of the lock screws. Remove the screws.
Except Millenia
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. If equipped, disarm and remove the air bag.
  3. Remove the steering wheel and the combination switch.
  4. Remove the steering column by performing the following:
    1. Remove the driver's side under dash covers.
    2. If equipped, disconnect the key interlock cable from the steering column.
    3. Detach any remaining electrical wire harness connectors from the column.
    4. Remove the upper column-to-dash mounting bolts. Support the steering column.
    5. Remove the intermediate shaft-to-steering column shaft coupling bolt and remove the steering column-to-firewall bracket bolts/nuts.
    6. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.
  5. Place the steering column securely on a workbench. Use a chisel and hammer to make slots in the head of the lock screws. Remove the screws.
  6. Remove the ignition lock assembly. To install:
  7. Position the ignition lock and bracket on the steering column.
  8. Install the new screws until the head twists off. Make sure the lock operates properly while tightening the new locking screws.
  9. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

How do i replace a heater cord?

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable
  2. Remove the console glove compartment. Disconnect the power point electrical connector. If equipped, disconnect the cellular phone antenna cable and coaxial cable from the console glove compartment. If equipped, disconnect the cellular phone antenna cable and coaxial cable.
  3. If equipped, remove the compact disc changer. Remove the screws. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the digital audio compact disc player.
  4. Place the gearshift lever in the 1 position.
  5. Remove the console top panel. Disconnect the cigar lighter electrical connector.
  6. Remove the floor console to floor bracket screws.
  7. Remove the floor console to gearshift bracket screws.
  8. Remove the floor console. Slide the floor console rearward. Remove the floor console. Disconnect the three electrical connectors. CAUTION
    Electronic modules are sensitive to static electrical charges. If exposed to these charges, damage may result.
  9. Remove the passenger side air bag module. WARNING
    Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) vehicle and when handling an air bag module. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment. WARNING
    Carry a live air bag module with the air bag and deployment door pointed away from your body. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment. WARNING
    Do not set a live air bag module down with the deployment door face down. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
  10. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.
  11. Push in on the two glove compartment door tabs and position downward.
  12. Disconnect the passenger air bag module electrical connector. Remove the passenger air bag module retaining bolts.
  13. Remove the passenger air bag module. Note: When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 mi) or more to relearn the strategy.
  14. If equipped, remove the rear seat climate control air duct sleeve.
  15. Remove the steering column. CAUTION
    Do not remove the steering column, steering wheel and air bag module as an assembly from the vehicle. Unless the steering column is locked to prevent rotation; or the lower end of the steering shaft is wired to prevent the steering wheel from being rotated, damage to the air bag sliding contact will occur. NOTE: All steering column components are assembled with specific fasteners. They are designed with a thread locking system to prevent loosening due to vibrations associated with normal vehicle operation. Make sure vehicle front wheels are in the straight-ahead position
  16. Remove the ignition switch lock
  17. Remove the steering wheel.
  18. Remove the air bag sliding contact.
  19. Remove the tilt wheel handle and shank by unscrewing it from the steering column.
  20. Remove the four upper and lower steering column shroud retaining screws. Remove the upper steering column shroud and lower steering column shroud.
  21. Remove the lower instrument panel trim cover.
  22. Unsnap the steering column lower trim panel.
  23. Remove the release lever hood retaining screws.
  24. Remove the brake release retaining screws.
  25. Remove the instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement
  26. Remove the instrument panel reinforcement brace.
  27. Disconnect the shift cable and bracket from the steering column by removing two screws.
  28. Disconnect the transmission shift cable loop from the shift tube hook (column shift).
  29. Remove the two multi-function switch retaining screws and set the multi-function switch aside.
  30. Remove the retaining screw and remove the wiring connector from the ignition switch.
  31. Remove two front steering column nuts and the steering column impact absorber
  32. Remove the pinch bolt from the steering column lower yoke.
  33. While supporting the column assembly, remove two rear column assembly retaining nuts.
  34. Disconnect the shift cable and bracket from the selector lever pivot. Disconnect the shift cable from the steering column shift tube lever. Disconnect the shift cable from the steering column bracket.
  35. Remove the shift cable and bracket from the lower column mounting.
  36. Remove two shift lock actuator-retaining screws and remove the shift lock actuator (console shift only).
  37. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.
  38. Release the cable from the parking brake actuator.
  39. Release the cable conduit from the parking brake actuator.
  40. To disconnect the driver's side outboard bulkhead electrical connector. Loosen the bolt. Disconnect the driver's side bulkhead electrical connector.
  41. To disconnect the driver's side inboard bulkhead electrical connector. Loosen the bolt. Disconnect the driver's side bulkhead electrical connector.
  42. If equipped, disconnect the heated seat switch electrical connectors.
  43. Remove the steering column mounting support to instrument cowl brace bolts.
  44. Remove the instrument panel dash brace to instrument panel bolt.
  45. Loosen the nut that secures the instrument panel dash brace. Position the instrument panel dash brace aside.
  46. Remove the pin-type retainers. Remove the passenger side instrument panel insulator. Remove the courtesy lamp.
  47. Disconnect the vacuum harness connector.
  48. Disconnect the in-line electrical harness connector.
  49. Position the passenger side scuff plate aside.
  50. Remove the passenger side cowl trim panel.

My car's horn actives every time I turn the steering wheel. What do you think is causing it to go off?

My 2000 Cirrus had the same problem.

Before I describe how I fixed mine, a warning and disclaimer:
Working on the horn switch, clock spring and steering column requires working safely with the air bag module. An airbag that goes off unintentionally can cause serious or fatal injuries. If you don't know how to handle the air bag safely, do not attempt to fix this yourself!

Symptom: Horn sounds when steering wheel is turned or with slight movement of the air bag module in the center of the steering wheel.

Possible causes:
1. Deteriorated insulators under the air bag mounting bracket screws. (This is what caused the problem in my case.)
2. Warped or bent steering wheel or air bag module.
3. Short circuit in clock spring assembly.
4. Short circuit in steering column due to abraded or pinched wire.
5. Faulty horn relay. (Very unlikely if the horn only sounds when turning the wheel.)

How the "horn switch" works: The term "horn switch" is a bit of a misnomer because there is no identifiable "switch" as one might think. The "switch" is actually a combination of parts: The four air bag bracket mounting screws, four plastic bushings and washers that insulate the air bag mounting brackets from the screws which are fastened to the grounded steering column, four springs under the bushings and the metal back side of the airbag module. The horn wire, which comes from the horn relay up the steering column and through he clock spring, is connected to the left hand mounting bracket which is electrically connected to the back of the airbag module which is electrically connected to the right hand mounting bracket when everything is assembled. When the air bag module is pushed in, the metal back contacts one or more of the four air bag module mounting screws completing the circuit to ground and thus activating the horn relay.

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal on the strut tower under the hood and pull the two 10 A air bag fuses from the fuse panel on the left side of the dash.


2. Loosen the two torx head screws on the back of the steering wheel that secure the air bag module to the wheel. The screws are captive in plastic retainers, so don't try to remove them.

3. Remove the air bag module, pull out the connector lock and disconnect the air bag module connector.

4. Place the air bag module on a flat surface connector side down away from where you are working.

5. Locate the four air bag mounting bracket screws. Look for black gritty debris around the screw heads and inside the steering wheel. This is an indication that the top insulating washers have deteriorated allowing the mounting brackets to short out to the screws.

6. Now reconnect the battery negative lead and do the following tests:

a. Move the left hand bracket slightly. If the horn sounds, then the top side insulating washers are either gone or deteriorated. If you want to test the right hand bracket, you will need to connect a jumper wire between the brackets. If one washer is cracked or missing, it is likely they all are.

b. Disconnect the horn wire from the left hand bracket. Start the car and turn the steering wheel to the stop in both directions. If the horn still sounds, then you have either a bad clock spring or a short circuit in the steering column.

The repair if the insulating washers are bad:

The official Chrysler repair manual says to replace the steering wheel (about $260); however, there is a cheaper solution.

1. Remove the four air bag bracket mounting screws, bushings, springs and the two brackets, paying careful attention to how they are assembled so you can re-assemble them later.

2. Clean any debris, dirt and grease from the brackets and undersides of the screw heads.

3. Purchase or fabricate some thin insulating (plastic) washers to replace the ones that deteriorated, which unfortunately you cannot buy from Chrysler. I insulated my brackets and screws with kapton insulating tape plus some very thin plastic washers I cut from some blister pack packaging scrap (probably clear polystyrene). This plastic is very thin, but still is pretty tough. Some hollow punches are handy for punching the holes and making nice round washers, but you could probably do it with small scissors or your wife's scrapbook punches if you are careful.

4. Reassemble the air bag mounting brackets to the steering wheel placing the new insulating washers and/or tape between the screw heads and brackets.

5. Reconnect the horn wire to the left hand bracket and move the bracket around a bit. If the horn doesn't sound, then you likely have fixed the problem. Once again, to test the right hand bracket, you need to jumper the left and right brackets together.

6. Disconnect the negative battery lead and wait at least two minutes before proceeding to ensure the air bag capacitor is discharged.

7. Reconnect the air bag connector to the air bag module and insert connector lock.

8. Reassemble the air bag module to the steering wheel.

9. Reconnect the negative battery lead and test the horn. It should blow only when the air bag module is pushed in. Start the car and turn the wheel to both extremes to test the repair.
If the horn sounds continuously, then the washers you put in are two thick causing the air bag module to rest on the screw heads.

10. Turn the car off and reinsert the two 10 A air bag fuses, then restart the car and make sure the air bag light comes on briefly then goes off.

I've been in a wreck the damage is fixed. I have a new airbag control module. I've been told I need to replace the "crash sensors" before installing the new airbag control module. Where are the Crash...

The crash sensors are located inside the computer the accelarometer would of been replaced if the computer was replaced. Or the air bag control modual. The clock spring would need to be replaced but the front magnetic sensors should be fine, they don't normally wear out. they can be damaged but the air bag warning light would flash if it was bad. And the air bag would still not go off unless the other condtions are met to make the bag deploy. The air control modual would have been replaced if it was done by a shop that is part of the service when the bags deploy. The crash sensors are a magnet with a steel ball and when the right speed is reached and the ball is let go from the metal o ring that it sits in it will deploy the first trigger the next trigger would be the acelorometer in the air control module and the impact would have to be strong enought to knock that ball loose as well to trigger the air bag.

The airbags sensor ligth came on

The air bag control module self-checks the crash sensors every time the engine is started, so unless the air bag warning light is on the sensors are assumed to be okay. If a fault is detected, the air bag warning light will come on and usually deactivate the air bag system. Using a scan tool, you can pull the trouble code from the system and refer to the appropriate diagnostic chart in a service manual to troubleshoot the problem. Air bag service information can also be found on the vehicle manufacturer's website. Loss of circuit continuity anywhere in the air bag system, or loss of power to the air bag module are common causes of trouble codes.

Because crash sensors are sealed units, you cannot always determine their true condition by outward appearances. Any sensor that is obviously sustained physical damage as a result of a collision or other damage should be replaced. But what about ones that look okay? Most electromechanical crash sensors are designed to be electrically open in their rest condition. So one quick check you can perform is to check for continuity with an ohmmeter. If the sensor contacts are closed, it has not reset and should be replaced.

CAUTION! Do not attempt to check or replace any crash sensor unless the air bag module has first been deactivated (or deployed as a result of an accident). This can be done by unplugging the air bag connector at the base of the steering column and waiting at least 10 minutes or longer depending on the application (always refer to a service manual for the proper deactivation and removal procedure).

unless u are familiar with air bag assemblies I suggest u take it to a qualified mechanic..if u accidently touch something wrong u can deploy the bag and cause serious harm to yourself..u have to remove the air bag in the steering column

You'll need to remove the upper and lower steering column covers.
Also all the trim under the drivers side, kneee bolster, etc...
The ignition switch has 2 screws holding it on.
Remove those screws and all related wiring harness.
Then the switch.
Here is the procedure from GM......

Place the multifunction lever in the center or the OFF position.
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

Disconnect the battery negative cable.
Disable the SIR system.
Remove the steering wheel inflator module.
Remove the horn plunger contact.
Remove the steering wheel.
Remove the tilt wheel lever.
Remove the ignition lock cylinder. Remove the upper steering column trim cover.
Couldnt find a diagram. Hope this helps.

Key gets stuck

There is a solenoid & plunger next to the ignition switch inside the steering column that stops functioning. The plunger must be retracted in order for the switch to turn all the way so the key can be removed. manually inserted the plunger and take out the key.

Ignition problems

You have an issue with the mechanism that operates the iginition switch down low on the top of the column, this is the electrical switch, you must pull the column apart and see what is broken, but be warned it is a really hard job unless you have allot of patience and time don't do it, have a Ford shop fix it or locate a used column on the internet, ebay has these kinds of parts cheap, I got a good used column for my 84 Corvette for $100 shipped to my door. Good luck.
