The main brain box (ECU) is in control of the compressor. For instance, it shuts the compressor off if the brake lights come on. The brain could be refusing the compressor for several reasons.

Air conditioning compressor not getting power on 96 Chevy Tahoe

Freon is what you are missing, our more specificly a refigerant charge that exceeds 45psi on the low side pressure line. This system has two pressure switches, a high side cut-out switch mounted on the rear of the compressor, and a low side or pressure cycling switch on the suction line.
Jump the low side switch contacts to ensure the electronics are sound for this system. If the compressor cycles, you know the system is low on a refrigerant charge. Turning on the AC is a request, and certain criteria must be met before the system operates as designed. Good luck

My ford aerostar wont start the battery is new and its dead and when the batter is up it still wont start it acts like it wont turn over I smell gas when turning the key I hear the pump but it wont fire

check the voltage to the alternator it could be low therefore draining your battery. You can do a voltage test at your nearby parts store free of charge.

Low on freon on 1995 ford areostar

You charge the a-c on the low side. If you are hooking up to check high side reading it is located to the right of the air cleaner and radiator. Good luck.

My air bag light on my 2000 Ford Econoline van flashes a 19 code. Does anyone know what that means?

Seems to be a very common problem with Ford. The wiring harness beneath the drivers seat contains the sensors for the airbag system. Go under the drivers seat and secure all the wires and clips. This makes most error lights for the airbags go away. Hope this helps and good luck!
