Stuck in Park

My 96 Grand Marquis acted up a few times like hard to get out of Park.
did this 2 or 3 times and now it's stuck good.

called my mechanic and he said there's a manual override to get it to at least go into a gear.
I can then bring him the car, he said there's a wire or a cable that gets worn out or stetched too much.

I can't find my owner's manual, so any asisstance is appreciated.

I have the same problem with my 96 grand marquis. We got it into gear by shear persistance of trying over and over again and got it taken in. Our mechanic said there was a sensor in it or something that got blown out but now its doing it again and it was only fixed for about a month. Its got to be a bigger issue than just a sensor or whatever. HELP!!!!

I just replaced the brake switch for the second time in 6 months on our 1996 Crown Victoria. I can now get the car out of park, but I don't have any brake lights. Why is this happening and does anyone know if there was a recall on this item?

The park lock mechanism is deactivated by the brake switch. Check to make sure the brake lights are working before any other repairs are made. When the key is in the on position and you depress the brake pedal it allows you to take the car out of park. One can usually turn the key one click and not have power to the park lock mechanism. Then depress the brake pedal and put the car in neutral. With your foot on the brake pedal you can start the car and drive normal but when you put the car in park the process will have to be repeated. Often times one of the wires to the brake light switch on the brake pedal gets brittle and causes intermittent contact or no contact. Check this first.

WHY CAN'T I SHIFT MY 1997 GRAND MARQUIS OUT OF PARK AND INTO ANY GEAR?

You may have a faulty Break-light switch. If the switch is bad, then it will behave as if you have no breaks afa the shift-lever is concerned.

Stuck in park Grand Marquis. Is there a release lever under the dash panal to release the shifter out of park? This has happened before and the mechanic reached under the dashboard to get the lever to...

When the ignition lock is in the off or Acc. position, the shifter is locked in the Park position to make vehicle theft more difficult, to make it so that you cannot inadvertently put the car into park while the key is still on and to make it so you cannot turn the key to the steering lock position unless the car is in park (so if you have to turn off a runaway engine you don't accidentally lock the steering) and to make it impossible for kids playing in the car to take the car out of park, and have it roll away with them in it.

It sounds like this mechanism is not releasing the shifter as it should.

Get a good vantage point to look under the dash with plenty of light, and move the shifter to see if you can see the mechanism that captures it. Perhaps you will be able to see how to release it.

96 grand jeep cherokee is jammed into park

the simple fix might be the park interlock cable. this locks the shifter unless you press and hold the brake pedal while selecting gears. I've seen and replaced a few of these on several chrysler/dodge vehicles.
