No shortcut, had to take pulley off. It was'nt that bg a deal, just secure pulley so it won't turn while loosening. If the pulley had been 1/8th of an inch smaller in diameter, lower bolt would have came right out. Some engineer probably got a hell of a christmas bonus for that engineering marvel!!!
Thanks alot anyway,

Where is the crankshaft sensor located on a 98 mazda mpv

Looking at it from the front: it's on the right hand side of the front of the engine, underneath all the pulleys and belts to the left side of the water hose inlet. (You'll have to take the plastic dirt guard off the bottom of the car.) There is a two wire hookup to what is just bigger than a AA battery; which is the CKS (crankshaft sensor). It takes a #10 socket to get the one bolt loose. Now be careful not to twist the head off the bolt (that's what I did just 4 days ago! ) because it's a ****** to try and boar that thing out to get a new bolt in. (Thankfully it's a soft metal and so I just drilled a little off kilter and put a stainless bolt back in it's place without needing a tap.) Hope this helps!

Having trouble removing the alternator.

I belive there is a pulley that needs to be removed in order to access the alternator. It is a challenge but the bolts are all accessable it just takes a bit to figure out. I know there was one bolt I had to get at from under the car.

How to replace the alternator on a 2003 Mazda MPV

Disconnect the battery at the positive terminal by turning the bolt counterclockwise. Disconnect the alternator's terminal by turning the nut counterclockwise and removing the loop from the terminal bolt. Store these connectors away from the battery.

Remove the belt by pressing on the tension pulley arm firmly, then sliding the belt form underneath the idle pulley wheel. Release the tension pulley and the belt will slacken; it can then be removed from the alternator pulley wheel.

Remove the alternator by turning the mount bolts counterclockwise, then sliding them out of the mount arms. Some models may have mount bolt heads that must be held in place with a wrench while turning the nut. With the mounts free, the alternator can be exchanged for a new unit. Position the new alternator into the mount arms and slide the mount bolts into place, locking them down with the nuts turned clockwise.

Wrap the drive belt around the alternator pulley wheel (groove side down), then press the tension pulley arm and slide the belt back under the idle pulley wheel. Release the tension arm and the belt will automatically adjust to the proper tension.

Reconnect the alternator's terminal loop by placing it over the bolt and turning the nut clockwise. Connect the battery by turning the positive terminal bolt clockwise.

Missing what seems to be tensioner pulley for the

it is ether a tensioner pulley our a idler pulley that assists the belt you will have to work out if it is a spring loaded set up/if it can move our if it is just stationary (this would be a idler pulley)
