First check to see if you have brake lights, brake light switch might be bad , if you do have brake lights then brake interlock sensor is bad ,you can take center console out and disconnect the interlock cable from the gear shifter. or it may just need to be adjusted.

I am having this issue. My 1991 Mazda 626 is stuck in park, not on an incline, and the brake lights come on. How should I proceed? I have tried the switch next to the gear selector, and nothing happens. I can't figure out how to remove the console, either. Any help is much appreciated.

Gear shift stuck in park

Could be the brake switch, or the shift lock solenoid. You may be able to take the shifter out of park by unlocking the key switch but not turning the switch to the on position. The components would need to be tested.

Ihave a 1991 tempo. when i went to start it today it would not shift out of park. the steering wheel still moves but the gear shift wont. any idea what could be wrong

Could be a faulty brake light switch, or the solenoid for the shifter lock.
You may be able to shift it out of park if you unlock the steering wheel but not turn the key to On.

My 1994 Chevy Corsica automatic shift stick got stuck at the moment I park to drop someone off. After a while after checking the gears, the fuses and even the battery, the car's gear stick was able to...

There is a small cable attached to the shift lever that runs up to the ignition switch on the steering column. If it gets stuck, your shift lever won't move out of park and your key can get stuck and you won't be able to pull it out.

Drop the steering column down and detach the cable to free up your shifter and/or key. Make sure to replace it as soon as possible as it is a safety feature.

GEAR STUCK ON PARK AND WON'T MOVE

I think your brake shift interlock solenoid is not releasing the Park position when you apply the brake.

Check for a blown fuse first. see owner manual for location of fuse.

Also, check owner manual for how to manually bypass the interlock.

When you step on the brake pedal, it activates a solenoid that unlocks the shift linkage cable so it will move. It is a safety feature to ensure you have you foot on the brake and not the gas, as you shift out of park.

please rate highly if this helps.

Stuck in low gear, key comes out. suspect something wrong in steering column

Could be your shift cable adjustment. In the engine compartment move the shift cable forward ( you can do this by hand) This will move the transmission out of low gear and into park. You will probably find you can now shift into the other gears without problem but if you go into low it will stick again. You might be able to adjust it or you might have to replace the cable.

2006 Nissan X Trail Gear Shift Stuck in Park. No warning lights are on, car starts fine, gear shift stuck in park and will not move unless I manually do it by depressing the shift lock with a key or screw...

This is not a permanent fix, but you'll be able to shift and drive...this is a "safety feature" when you're break lights aren't working...it may be a fuse issue, i found that didn't help either.

How to drive it while it's "broken" On the top left of your gear shift is circle that looks like a button that is only 3/4 there...see picture (it's circled in red)

e024280.jpg
pry that off with a key or something... now restart your car, push on the break and at the same time insert a key or something into the now open hole...while pushing down use the other key to shift into reverse. You will need to do the same thing to shift back into park.

Good heavens that is the most inneficient safety feature I've ever heard of. How about instead of leaving the car immoble and keeping you in a scetchy neihborhood to get mugged they just "invent" a warning light notification. grr

Key getting stuck in ignition

This has been know to happen with age and after a good dousing with coffee or soda. Access to the switch is relatively simple by removing the console trim cover.

Do the brake lights work? the circuit that unlocks the shifter is on the same circuit as the brake light switch and if the brake light switch or its fuse is bad this problem can happen
