1992 Buick Riviera will not crank over. Security light not blinking. It turns off at the on position. Try to start the car will not crank over. A worn key? Key #11 (4570 ohms) Shoud I bypass the VATS?

1992 is old with not too much in the way electrical. To diagnose, run wire from the battery to the terminal on the starter solenoid. ( Be in neutral on gearshift). If it starts, then it is most likely the key switch.

WHERE IS THE VATS PASSLOCK/PASSKEY SECURITY SYSTEM LOCATED IN A 1990 Buick Riviera

Normally the TDM (Theft Deterrent Module) is located behind the glovebox and tucked in the frame just a little. Here is a link that may help you with this problem

Turns over. Getting gas and firing, but won't start?

The problem might be your Vats security system. This causes the car to either "not start" or "shut down" while running, or start for 1-5 seconds and then die. (depending on the system) If the security light flashes, i guarantee that this is what the problem is. 1st trick, (if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my regal for more than a year.

Cheap fix: Bypass the chip in your key. Temporary, but effective.

Never worry again fix: Bypass the whole VATS/Passlock/passkey I or passkey II system entirely. Literally take it out, and throw it away. I just did this in my Regal. Took about an hour. Took longer to find the thing than it did to fix the problem. For a list of cars effected by this problem. See the NEWROCKIES link on the right side of their page.........

----- With this fix, you can take that whole Vats, passlock, passkey **** system out of your car all together. Good info on both sites

1996 Buick RIVIERA security light stays on but car functions properly for now

The security system (VATS/PassKey) is having problems, it's typical on those cars/years. When the TDM starts failing, it will do it gradually and the car will begin to randomly don't start and then get worse with time up to a point that it won't start anymore. It's been a nightmare for us. You can find a great write-up here: http://newrockies.ca , it was the only thing that saved my 94 Park Avenue that has the same security system.

I have a 1995 Buick Riviera with a 3.8 supercharged V6. Vin# 1. It's a series 1 L67. I am having a problem with the security on this car. When I put the key in and try to start it the security light comes...

Next time it happen.

Put your foot on the brake, shift the gear selector to neutral "N" and start the car.

There is a switch call neutral safety switch and it can be intermittent.

If you can start the car in "N" and not in "P" then neutral safety switch is at fault.

Replace it as soon as possible to prevent damage to the wiring and transmission computer.

Also check for the key that your are using daily.

The resistor dot contact can be worn out.

Try the spare key and see is the problem follow,

Google GM VATS BYPASS is your are dead set on bypassing this setup.

1996 LeSabre Engine will not crank over

This fix was for a 1996 Buick LeSabre.
I found the key reader in the ignition switch was faulty.
Made up a resistor pack to match the key resistance, cut the orange wire which comes out of the steering coloumn (it contains two white wires) from the reader to the VATS module and soldered it into the two white wires going into the VATS module.
This bypasses the security system so now any properly cut key will start the car.
