The easiest way is to check it at the fuel schrader valve mounted on the engine. Use a clear bottle and attach the fuel pressure gage. run the engine and release the fuel into a clean bottle. Any water and dirt will settle to the bottom of the bottle.

I'm not a mechanic but from experience I suggest that before you start with repairs, start with the fuel. You may have either picked up some dirty gas when last filled up or just stirred something up in the tank. Try a fuel cleaner from any auto parts store. Also, and this is probably not realated, the check engine light may come on if your gas cap is not tight. Good Luck

I have a problem starting it will try to turn over chugging along 3,4 times the other day it semmed it would turn over, you can hear the starter that has been changed, I have never changed the fuel...

no i dont think so because from your description i would suspect a battery problem or a engine earth to chassis problem if its not turning over right .A dirty fuel filter on a petrol engine is something i rarely come across ,unless its a static generator or similar thats filled from a can.All fuel delivery pumps on garage forecourts have a micronic filter on the delivery side so changing a fuel filter is something i just dont have to do unless its a old vehicle with a metal fuel tank and this one doesnt have one.Ask a local mechanic to have a look for you and see what he/she says

Hi, My '04 'misses' when idling AND while driving. It's a chug-like roughness????I've just had a service(plugs,transmission)Hayley. E-mail: vernondg@hotmail.com

hey,it's against fixya.com policy for me to contact you directly, but i will try to assist you. lets do this by the numbers. bought fuel lately? suspect bad fuel? add clear, clear, rubbing alcohol to your gas tank and this will dry up any water in the gas tank and it will not harm your engine at all. if you do not suspect bad fuel purchase, then, maybe clogging fuel injectors in the engine. remedy, local parts store, autozone, advance auto parts, purchase lucas fuel injector treatment{cleaner] just add it to your fuel tank.follow the instructions on the bottle, after 25to50miles,you should see a difference in the engine.but just to diagnose for you without hearing the engine, sounds like a clogged fuel injector or misfire of sparkplugs, but you've already replaced the plugs,so fuel injectors is my diagnosis.thank you for choosing fixya.com

Hi it sounds like you have picked up some dirty fuel,
what you need to do now is go to your nearest garage or car spares shop and buy some decent fuel line cleaner, Red X is a good brand to buy, make sure you buy correct type for your engine ie petrol or diesel the follow instructions on the back of the bottle

how ever.
it will say pour this into a full tank of fuel, dont do this pour it into half a tank of fuel doing this makes it work a lot quicker and cleans a lot better once you have poured it in it will take about an hour to clean all the fuel lines and injectors and doing this should turn the warning light off. you could also get the fuel filter changed just to make sure it is not blocked in any way.

the fuel line cleaner will clean the whole fuel line and all the injectors it will make your car run perfect and it increases mpg, its a good idea to use this product every couple of months on vehicles of your age as it keeps them running properly and cuts down and buying spare parts such as injectors due to them being blocked.

have a go with the product and if you have any problems after just give me a shout back ok.

plz dont forget to rate as i have a long list of posts that people have not rated and its filling up my page,

let me know if you need further assistance

Well, I guess I would find a way to get the fuel delivery right at the point of use diverted into a jar, so I could inspect for water or silt.

Fuel delivery bad enough to make the engine run wrong ought to be visible as a lean burn telltale on the spark plug insulators.

I would have a shop check to see what the coil(s) is/are capable of delivering, and what the engine requires for spark voltage while running. If the two are very close, you can easily run out of necessary voltage to fire the plugs.

The intermittancy though does seem to argue for something else...

Maybe your last fill up brought you some water with the fuel. Try some gas guard or similar in the fuel tank that picks up water into alcohol and carries it through to the engine and burns it.

Wont run in gear. sat for a year and a 1/2 over weedy gravel with a 1/4 tank of gas, filled to half and drove on highway for an hour with only problem some engine misses under 40 km/h. did oil change,...

When stored outdoors for any length of time, you can get a substantial amount of condensation to form inside the fuel tank (as much as a half gallon) It will remain at the bottom of the tank and really mess with how it runs. Check fuel filter...Pour contents into a clean glass jar...If any water is found at all, you can bet there is quite a bit in the tank.

Sounds like bad carbon build up, have you tryed using fuel injection cleaner yet? Because of the buildup, I would suggest putting it in with only a half a tank (to get a higher concentration of cleaner vers fuel). Once in, run it down the highway (the cleaner works best when the engine is hot) until you are almost out of gas, then fill it up and add another bottle of injector cleaner (alway add the injector cleaner after filling as the cleaner will foam if added before and this will lead to gas spillage at the pumps). Run the car normally. If it is just carbon, by you next tank of gas the problem should be solved. As pervention, I recomend using fuel injection cleaner every 4 tank fulls (for most people it works out to about once a month).
