Car "bucks" and sometimes engine dies-intermitently

Lately, our car has been having episodes of bucking or surging when we are driving it....it seems to be worse when the engine is under greater load, like traveling above 50 mph, going uphill, or when AC is running. Lately, the engine has also started dying, usually at lower speeds (slowing to stop or taking off from stop), but happened a couple of times when driving down the road at 35 mph. The problem can last for a second or two, but sometimes for 5 min. or longer. But then car recovers itself and can drive for hours without the problem happening. Mech's are stumped...can anyone help ID this problem and get our otherwise great car back to its old self? THANKS!

My 2001 LeSabre started the same thing a couple of days ago. It's OK at higher speeds. SOmetimes there is a hard slamming clunk sound as the xmission shifts. Both problems started a few days ago. Is there a vacuum modulator on the xmission like the cars of old days?..Thanks..Bill

As odd as this may sound its a power (electrical) problem check the battery the alternator and the cable coming off of the alternator my car does this when there is not enough current to (something?) lol.... so check all those thigs and report back

I posted the original problem...after a few different tries, we discovered that it was the ECM (the main computer). Once replaced, the car has not had a problem since!

Does this happen when the car has a full tank of gas? or is it 1/2 ?to 1/4 tank ?it could be the fuel pump is over heating or a bad wire connected to one of the ignition components or even the mass air sensor. check the wiring make sure it is secure and corrosion free but also make sure your fuel pump isnt over heating try and look at your gas gauge next time it happens

2004 bug engine surging

The issue may be the EGR valve. Sometimes the valve can test out OK with a vacuum pump but can still cause issues with surging. Is this happening between a quarter and half throttle? The reason you wont notice it before it warms up is because the ECM doesnt activate the EGR valve when it is cold. One temporary test you could do is unplug the EGR valve and try and drive the car once it is warmed up. If this stops the surging this is the issue. One other issue could be your Fuel pressure regulator. Your fuel pressure could be low from this and it will cause your fuel injectors not to be able to vaporizefuel as much causing the bucking feeling. Keep me posted. If you found this solution helpful please rate it when you get a chance.

2000 es300, sometimes surges - last time it seem to lose power could only drive about 20 miles per hour

Check for failed EGR Valve or system component

If the valve has a vacuum hose going to it ,disconnect,
plug hose & test drive to evaluate bad valve & high vacuum
signal as you suggested

Engine bucks when driving

If you have changed your timing, you may need to change the spark plugs (inexpensive at an auto store) out, they may be misfiring. Another part of that, could be the distributor cap which is a little more pricey new, you may want to look at a junk yard type place.
Let me know if this works

2005 nissan murano "s" surges and bucks when accelerating.

You need to have your engine flushed and cleaned out. One or more of your spark plugs aint firing. You need to replace them all to include the wires as well. If you dont get your engine flushed, you could blow your engine up.
