Dodge Intrepid 1996 3.5L No Start

Our car was running fine, no codes, no check engine. One morning it didn't want to start. The week or so before this I noticed it started hard a few times, like it wasn't getting fuel or had an electrical problem.

Please advise how to check MAP sensor, Crank Shaft Position sensor, fuel pressure and/or fuel period at the injector, etc. What is the most likely reason for no start on this model? The fuel pump works as we can hear it pressurize. We also know everything electrical works fine. The car has ~125K and has been serviced well all along. We just don't have the money to let a shop rape us on a repair I can do myself.

As far as "knowing everything electrical works fine:, I mean we reviewed the fuses and relays and they are not the problem. We would like to know the way mechanics test for things like gas pressure and how do we know if all the gas is going back into the tank -vs- into the fuel injectors? What sensor can we test for that or what steps do we take?

What about electrical issues, describe the MAP and Crank sensor in relation to where it is on this model car. How do we test w/ an basic analog and/or digital meter? What are some quick tests we can do to exhaust possiblities so we can focus on what might be the problem.

Do you recommend using a code reader even though no check engine light was on before it started hard then one morning didn't start?

Does anyone think this is related to the timing belt? If so how do we inspect this quickly, where is the inspection plate located on this model (3.5L) engine?

Thank you so much in advance for your input and time - this site seems like such a valuable resource.

First check sparks, air filter and fuil filter and all simple things. You can also use injector cleaner.

My best advice is to buy a Chilton manual for your car, it will be the best $20 buck you spend on it. The Chilton will show and explain the location and testing of all the component you listed and all the specs for the car. You will also want to check the throttle positioning sensor.

You won't need a code reader since the engine light did not come on. The light won't come on if the problem is intermittent or with the crank, cam, map throttle positioning, or air flow sensors, or an EGR valve. These generally won't throw a code. I don't believe this is with the timing belt, but there is an inspection access on the plastic timing belt cover on the front of the engine, but this is just for inspecting the belt for wear, and you won't be able to see the timing marks without taking the cover off.

I have a 98 Intrepid with a 2.7 engine. It was driving fine on Thursday night. Went to leave for work Friday morning and it wouldn't start. So far, we have tried a new battery, had the started tested,

The 2.7 had alot of problems with the cam sensor. I would start there. Its located on the front top of the timing cover. Unplug it and see if it "Pops" attempts to start.

2000 Dodge Intrepid Wont Start

first of all, check your code to see what the car computer shows. To do that , insert the key in the ignition and switch it on three time within 2 seconds and the third time live the key in the on position. All the instrument panel lights will lite and the oddometer will display the fault code that may br the cause for your car not starting. goood luck.
