When I start my engine within the first five minutes of running it idles rough, loses power, backfire thru the exhaust. After 2-3 minutes it will smooth out and run perfect. Is worse in the winter but also does it in the summer. I have replaced plug wires, total tune up, had the timing checked, replaced MAP sensor and coolant temp sensor. These improvements helped but it is still doing it. Any ideas will be appreciated.

Someone told me battery - replaced battery - didn't help!

Someone told me plugs and wires - replaced - didn't help!

I see two different alternatives on this site:

    1) Fuel Pressure - Pump or regulator

    2) Engine Coolant Temp Sensor Going Bad

    Sounds like more money!

Your engine coolant temp. sensor is going bad. What happens is that your engine computer is receiving a bad signal from the ECT sensor and it thinks it's 40 below. An example is it basically slams the choke shut if it had a distributor. When it cools off, I'll bet it runs just fine.

Ranger looses power up hill

I am assuming you have the 2.3 liter 4cylinder engine.. This is common in all rangers straight out of the factory with that motor. Your asking alot out of a 4 cylinder truck that also get good gas mileage. they just do not have the capacity to gain speed up a hill. There are a few solutions for you that you could try. If it is a 5 speed manual transmission try to speed up before the hill and when you start losing speed go to 4th gear. this is also good for using as a passing gear as im sure you have noticed you lack power when trying to rapidly accelerate at highway speed to pass. an aftermarket cold air intake combined with a less restrictive exuast will give you anywhere from 5-20 hp gain AND give you more MPG's

Or you can buy a light truck with a v6 or v8 in it. rangers can be equipped with v6 as can chevy s10's. dodge dakotas have the availability of small block v8. this is of course will cost you alot in gas (based on experience) I am a 10 yr mechanic and have owned 2- 4 cylinder rangers a 93 and a 94 my dakota which i still own is a 01

Have a compression test done ,and look for a vacuum leak near the cylinder, like a vacuum hose or intake gasket. If the compression test shows a fluctuation between the 3 and 4 cylinder, then the head gasket would need to be replaced.

Starter solenoid???? 2 large posts and 2 small posts on old one or 2 large and 1 small? the one large wire goes to the starter(rear post), all the others goes on the front post. little wire goes on the little post, if the old one has 4 posts, then you have the wrong solenoid.
