Question about 2002 Volkswagen Passat

Oil pressure indicator

The car starts fine...there is a load ticking and when i get up to about 3500 rpms a indicator light comes on that says....STOP....Oil pressure...i put it in drive and floor it and it barely moves

    The STOP indicator comes on and now there is a loud ticking noise,also seem to be burning oil. I have put lucas engine treatment into the engine.The car has about 160K and serviced regularly!

    My 2002 Volkswagen Passat started beeping then the a STOP message came on, then the oil pressure is low message, and now the engine light is on. I service my car on a regular basis. I immediately took it to get the oil and filter changed. After the mechanic check the car out he found that I needed to change the transmission fluid as well. I hope this works.

Replace oil, change filter you might have already caused major damage. check transmission fluid and see if it helps at all

If the oil level is low, or the oil pump is worn out, this can happen. It indicates a dropping of oil pressure either due to oil moving forward away from the sump (low oil), or reduction of pressure due to lower rpms (worn out pump).

Low pressure when at idle, after the engine has warmed up and the oil has thinned, indicates that the oil pump is worn and needs to be replaced.

Oil pressure light staying on when ticking over,or braking


The fault is indicating low oil pressure, when the engine revs are low the oil pressure drops, first thing to do is change the oil pressure switch (cheapest option), see if that cures the fault. If not have the oil pressure checked, if the fault is the oil pump, then it could cause serious engine damage. Needs to be check out as soon as possible. Good Luck

Your motor oil level is low.
The oil light indicates low oil pressure - at higher RPMs the oil sending unit (oil pump) can create
a little oil pressure, but at lower RPMs it fails to keep up.
If the oil level is good, then the oil sending unit itself is going bad.

have the engine oil pressure checked with a mechanical guage, if it is about 15 PSI hot replace the sending unit for the guage, u will need to buy a special deep oil pressure sending unit socket for this job, they are made by KD and Lisle tools, they can be bought at NAPA.

Engine knock hard over 2500 rpm


Does the oil light come on or the knock occur during the engine warm up after a cold start?
There could be a couple of problems causing the issue. You could have an oil pressure pump or pump pressure regulator sticking. I would have a mechanical oil pressure gauge installed and verify oil pressure at idle and 2500 rpms to make sure oil pressure is in normal ranges.
You could also have excessive piston rod bearing, crankshaft bearing or cam shaft bearing wear that will cause oil pressure to drop too low to prevent the rod knock your hearing at 2500 rpm.
You said a knock and not a ticking noise,so I don't believe a lifter is the issue at 2500 rpm.
Start with the oil pressure check and go from there.

My 1995 Acura Integra starts running roughly at 3500 rpms. Kept below 3500 rpms, it runs fine with no problems. It just started doing this. Never before. It seems there is somekind of govenor that kicks in...


If the fuel filter hasn't been changed in the last 2 years, that is a good place to start. Also,have you given it a full tune-up recently? those are the easy suggestions. Typically the major stuff shows up with a "check engine light" indication. My '97 Civic acted similarly to this, and it ended up being the fuel filter(at 167,00 miles). Cap/rotor/plugs or other ignition system faults will also limit high rev performance. When in doubt, Autozone will check your computer system for no charge if you're concerned about sending good money after bad.

Change the oil! The 318Cu in V8 (5.2 liter) engine has a problem with sludge build up on the oil pump pickup tube screen. This engine requires oil changes at or before 3500 miles with a high detergent oil.

Tapping noise


A tapping sound could be lifter tick, or rod knock... if it goes away, what you have is lifter tick, check your oil, low oil makes it worse.

Oil pumps up the hydraulic lash adjusters in your valve covers, at lower RPMs, the oil pressure is lower and will not fully pressurize them. Try holding your rpm at about 3500 or so with the car in neutral (parked) and see if it goes away, it should.

In later years (I think starting in 97 or so) mitsu started using a larger bore so called "third gen" lash adjuster. They don't tick as much, but they still do at times.

The good news, lash adjusters are not THAT hard to replace, figure a set of 24 will run you less than 150 in parts.

The better news, it doesn't hurt anything, as long as you can live with the sound, there isn't any reason to change them.
