Rough idle will stall if not given gas - 1987 Ford Mustang

    I have a 1981 Ford F-100, 300 cu. in. straight six. It has a one barrel carburetor. It starts fine and runs for about 2 seconds, then slowly runs rough and sputters and stops. There is no backfire and no smell of gas. It will continue run if you step on the gas pedal and will run a little rough. If you let off the gas pedal it will sputter and stop. It did this all of a sudden. One time it was running great and then the next time I tried to start the truck it did this. Could it be an air pump malfunction that blew out a diaphram or something in the carburetor?

    89' mustang GT 5.0 soft top convertable ! SOUNDS VERY FERMILER, well i have some issues ur having but mine are worse.i have charged the battery,had it charged from a jumper cables for a half hr. i go to start her and what do you know she either dose not start/dosent even want to turn over at all,and then may start but u have to keep her rpms up or els she dies and and she has a leaky power steering.and the ride is so rough,she vibrates more than personal toys!! LOL and on top i have only driven her for about an hr. total(sitting on the side of the road cause she died,dosent count for time!!).YES i $$ her 4 days ago I NEED HELP LIKE YESTERDAY WOULD HAVE BEEN GREAT! S.O.S

FORD USED A THICK FILM IGNITION ( MODULE ) " TFI " . IT SOMETIMES JUST GOES BAD AT ONCE AND THE CAR WONT START AT ALL. HOWEVER FOR THE STRANG TIMES IT WILL START AND ONCE THE HEAT OF THE ENGINE GETS TO THE POINT OF OVERHEATING THE "TFI" IT WILL MAKE THE IDLE RUFF/BAD THEN THE ENGINE STALLA UNTILL THE "TFI" COOLS DOWN THEN IT WILL START AGAIN. THE PART IS ABOUT 80 DOLLARS AND YOU WILL NEED A DEEPWALL 5.5mm SOCKET TO CHANGE IT. IT IS ON THE SIDE OF THE DISTRIBUTOR, YOU WILL NEED TO MARK THE DISTRIBUTOR ITSELF WITH A REFERENCE TO THE MOTOR THEN UNTIGHTEN THE 13mm BOLT THAT KEEPS THE DISTRIBUTOR TIGHT. TURN THE DISTRIBUTOR SO YOU CAN ACCESS THE BOLTS TO THE "TFI" ONCE YOU SWAP THE "TFI" ALIGN THE REFERENCE MARKS YOU MADE AND TIGHTEN THE DISTRIBUTOR BOLT.

ANOTHER QUICK TIP IS TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE MAINTAINING AT LEAST A MINIMUM OF 30PSI FUEL PRESSURE.

Jeep has been having a problem with this. i take it u have a 4.7L or a 3.7L. when the when to fix this problem they should of replaced all the valves (intake and exhaust). theres a tsb on this and the dealer can look it up. even if you paid for the service they will fix it for free cuz it wasn't fixed the first time. take it back to the them and tell the to read the tsb and fix it right.

hello first check your idle with the car running foot on brake see were your rpm reading is if your below 500rpm check your label underhood for your curb idle setting second see if theres a adjustment screw you can increase were your gas cable lever rest against your set screw underhood if you feel confident enough remove your iac motor idle air control valve if the bore were the end of the pintle extracts out to close has varnish builup our carbon it will stick creating vacuum leak type senario causing stalling rough idle sometimes even no start conditions good luck

check for black smoke at exhaust. stuck choke.... clean with carb. cleaner. could need adjusted. possible stuck float. no quick fix. diry fuel filter. replace.

Stalling at low idle


I don't know this specific car. But, if it has one, check your Idle Air Valve. This can cause the engine to stall. If you can hold the gas pedal and the engine will continue to run until you let off the gas, it is likely the IAV. It will not necessarily cause the engine to run rough. That could be a number of things like spark plugs, wires or dirty injectors. It could also be a compression problem. Is the check engine light on?

Idle air control (IAC) control rpm idle during idle.

Test it on idle with ALL electrical on full force.
RPM should increase.
If RPM remain the same then IAC is question.

1995 safari van w stalls when giving it gas. changed fuel pump and filter. replaced egr valve. sometimes rough idle. when it stalls just like you turned off key. then when you try to start it acts like it...


maybe your iac valve is not working? it takes place of a choke or temp sender to computer could be bad which controls t I.A.C. known as the idle control valve,do you have any codes?

95 cadillac eldorado engine stalls rough idle check engine light is on


I have a 1994 Cadillac Eldorado and every time i start it the car has rough Idle and the Idle fluctuate's. I also can feel it in the gas pedal when the car is doing this I tried replacing the throttle body sensor but it still does it I also was told it was the Idle error sensor. So instead of spending the unecessary money again I thought I would go online and see if anyone could help me with this problem.
