Our daughter has a '98 eclipse and it starts overheating when the car is at idle. When the car is moving the tempertature stays down like it is suppose to. Is it the thermostat?

I have the same problem with my 96 mitsubishi eclipse, when at idle it over heats. I have had the water pump changed and also have a new thermostat. When I turn the air on it seems to stop over heating .Help!!

I have the same problem with my 97 eclipse, I had the car checked about 6 months ago, but they couldn't find anything wrong with it. I had the thermostat replaced at that point, to no avail. As long as I keep moving, the temp stays down, but as soon as I'm idle, it starts to overheat again. If I turn on the heater when this is happening, it is no longer warm air.

I have a 98 Eclipse, noticed the same thing when sitting at red light. Checked the radiator, and found a crack about inch and a half long on the top of the radiator, in a seem. Put some of that radiator seal stuff in it, haven't had a problem since. ?? Now - onto the next problem.....

Use a bottle of yellow HEET dry gas to remove any moisture problem in the fuel.

Clean / replace air filter.

Top off ATF to MAX level.

Use starting fluid to aid starting.

1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse stalls out when driving or shuts down when at stop?

If it is overheating replace the thermostat.

Have you tested the vacuum pressure to make sure there is no leak?

I would also check for loose, or broken connectors/connections. Make sure the battery cables are securely tightened and not moving around or corroded.

its probably the Idle air motor. they always go bad on the 4g63.

rpms should be about 750, or 850 with the A/C on

98 eclipse Engine stall but stars

Sounds like your IAC (idle air control) motor needs to be replaced. If you are driving on the Interstate/freeway/highway for a bit and then get off, the car dies when your coming to a stop right?

Starting problem 96 eclipse

Possible vacuum leak, that would be the cheapest guess.
Check under the hood for cracked or detached vacuum hoses. Those you see, even if they appear intact, move them to see if their position affects the idle speed; sometimes the crack might not be visible until a hose is moved. Keep your hands clear of belts and fan.
If that doesn't find the problem, I recommend buying a Haynes or Chilton aftermarket manual for your Eclipse; they will be around $20 US and are available on line or in any auto parts store. If you do that, you have a number of emission control devices to check and I would also suggest you buy a low-priced (<$20) digital multimeter as you will need that to check several of the devices.

will the car stay running if you hold down the gas pedal a little? if it will, check the idle air control motor. it should be on the throttle body.
