Question about 1999 Pontiac Firebird

1 Answer

Engine shutting off

I have a 1999 V6 Firebird. It has 96,000 miles and was tuned up at about
93,000 miles. I had been driving it around without a/c on and no problems.
It seems to have a little skip when stopping with it in drive, but nothing major. After driving about 4 to 5 miles with the a/c on, the motor will run
raggedy and flash the check gages light on and shut off. You can smell the gas burn. One other thing is there seems to be a high pitched noise
coming from the exhaust, but there is flow out of the exhaust. Anybody have any idea what the problem can be? Can a semi-blocked muffler cause a problems like this? Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your advice. The converter was replaced a little while

ago, maybe 10,000 miles. What would keep burning up the

converter. This is the second one installed.

I dont know without looking at it myself but it kinda sounds like a stopped up converter.

In that case and pondering for a min i would have to then check out the a/c/ system. Make sure the compressor is not going bad. Unforantly any auto problem is hard is pinpoit without seeing it myself. As any mechanic would tell you. Might be best to take to a shop.

this sounds like an external voltage regulator issue..when it gets hot or shuts itself off the battery is whats running the vehicle..until the operating voltage drops below minimal.. then it all stops..get the charging system checked at a parts store.. they do it for free..

2002 Mercedes C320 very poor fuel economy ~8 mpg, no engine codes or faults present

I'm not sure what the problem is specifically, but I can assure you this--you're basically throwing money way (and possibly exacerbating the issue) by using 93 octane fuel. Your car is timed and tuned to run most economically and with best performance with 87 octane fuel. The higher the octane, the slower the fuel burns. Longer burn time can equate to more power, but ONLY if your engine is designed and tuned for this application.
Couple of suggestions..checkto make sure your exhaust is "free". A plugged catalytic converter can really rob mileage. Tire pressure and air filter are worth mentioning as well.

sounds like your thermostat is stuck open, if its takes a very long time for the engine to warm up and you get nothing but cold air from your heat then thats the first place i would start.

93 camry 3.0L V6 timing belt

Hello, and welcome to FixYa. Yes, you can drive the car to the shop without fear of any internal engine damage.

Your engine is not an "interference' engine; your valves will not be damaged if the belt slips a tooth or two. In fact, any Toyota engine with a timing belt is a non-interference engine.

Thanks for choosing FixYa for assistance.

Looks like you're engine's skipping and it could use a good tune-up, spark plug and wires, distributer cap and rotor, air and fuel filters and you should be in bisness.

V6 engine idles rough after restarting, then smooths out

My first guess would be a dirty carb/fuel injector set. Run some fuel cleaner through the tank and see if it gets better. You might have to do it through a couple of tanksful. How long since you've had a tune-up? It might just be that time.
