Question about 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera

1 Answer

Car gets hot during idle, also, sluggish acceleration.

Wtth car parked and idling with a/c on, car temp goes upto 3/4 mark on temp gauge. It has plenty of coolant and new water pump. The radiator cooling fan never comes on. Do I have two separate problems or are the cooing fan and sluggish acceleration related? PCM? The car seems to have normal acceleration when 2 or Low selected on shifter.

THERE ARE SENSORS FOR BOTH FANS THAT TELL THEM WHEN TO RUN & TURN OFF. ONE PRIMARILY RUNS WHEN YOU RUN THE A/C. THE OTHER RUNS WHEN THE ENGINE REACHES A CERTAIN TEMP. COULD BE THAT OR THERMOSTAT? IF THERES A LITTLE SCREW ON THE THERMOSTAT HOUSE YOU UNSCREW THE AND GET THE AIR OUT OF THE COOLING SYSTEM AFTER A REPAIR IS MADE TO! (WATERPUMP) UNSCREW IT ALITTLE BIT WITH THE CAR RUNNING AND ALLOW THE AIR TO BE PUSHED OUT THE LITTLE HOLE ON THE SIDE OF THAT LITTLT SCREW. WAIT TILL ONLY ANTIFREEZE COMES OUT THE HOLE WITHOUT STOPPING. A STEADY STREAM. THEN RETIGHTEN THE SCREW.. YOU CAN CHECK TO MAKE SURE YOUR FANS AREN'T THE PROBLEM BY UNPLUGGING THEM AND RUN JUMPER WIRES TO THE BATTERY TO SEE IF THEY RUN! UNLIKELY ITS THE FANS BOTH AT THE SAME TIME.GO TO AUTOZONE.COM AND SIGNUP FREE WITH EMAIL AND PUT YOUR CAR INFO IN AND IT WITH SHOW YOU WHERE THE FAN SWITCHES ARE MOUNTED AND TEST THEM IF THERE IS A TEST. GOO HELP SIGHT!! HOPWE THIS HELPS CRAIG

YOU NEED BLEED COOLANT SYSTEM.CHECK COOLANT LEVEL IN RADIATOR.ADD MORE DEXCOOL UNTIL COOLANT LEVEL IS CLOSE TO RADIATOR SPOUT.CRANK ENGINE LET IDLE UNTIL TOP RADIATOR HOSE GET HOT.WATCH TEMPERATURE GAUGE.IF TEMPERATURE GAUGE START RISING TO HOT ZONE.TURN OFF ENGINE.LET COOL DOWN.USE LARGE RAG SLOWLY OPEN RADIATOR CAP A LITTLE AT A TIME UNTIL ALL PRESSURE RELIEVED.REMOVE RADIATOR CAP.ADD MORE COOLANT.CRANK CAR AGAIN LET IDLE UNTIL TOP RADIATOR GET HOT.KEEP EYE ON TEMP.GAUGE ALSO.WHEN TEMP.GAUGE STOP CLIMBING.YOUR COOLANT SYSTEM BLED.WHEN DONE LET CAR SET A WHILE CHECK COOLANT LEVEL.ALSO FIRST THING IN THE MORNING CHECK COOLANT LEVEL AGAIN.AND BESURE ADD COOLANT IN THE OVERFLOW JUG TO THE COLD MARK.DONT OVER FILL THE COOLANT RESERVOIR JUG.WORK SAFELY DONT GET SCALDED.

Mitsubishi Triton V6 lacks power on acceleration

full power is only achieved when the engine is fully warm(operating temp).so if you accelerate more than, say, a third of the gas pedal, the car will feel sluggish.
this is more apparent when first starting the car in the morning in winter.almost like the car is going to stall.
most wear in the engine is leaving it to idle when cold you should always drive the car straight away from cold.then when hot turn on the a/c if required....

Temp gauge goes over hot and clear down past cold mark. water boiling fans working car stalled and filled coolant ran normal then

You should check and top of if necessary your coolant reservoir at least once a month. Other fluids to check at least once a month are, brake fluid, engine oil, transmittion fluid (automatics to be checked warm, idling in park).
Overheating is very harmful to your cars engine, and should be avoided/prevented at all cost. Once an engine shuts off due to excessive temperature, damage has already been done.

Clean the IAC. Disconnect throttle body air hose and you will see a hole on the bottom of the throttle body just before the butterfly valve. Spray throttle body cleaner down the IAC hole and then let it soak about 1/2 hour. Reconnect hose and run engine about a minute and then repeat this process 2 or more times. Toyota engines from 1997-2005 commonly have the IAC get cruded up with carbon as early as 35,000 miles. This is a sImple and cheap repair that many repair shops don't want you to know.
