Question about 1998 Ford Escort

2 Answers

I have a 1998 Ford Escort ZX2 4cyl. I am having a problem with my car starting. Sometimes it will crank over OK, but other times I will just hear a click, as if it is not getting good contact. I have replaced the starter and I have checked the battery and terminals. I recently purchased a starter relay switch but I am having trouble finding the location of the starter relay switch to replace it. Could you give me any help finding the location of this switch or any other help solving this problem, that you can think of trying?

I have a 98 Ford Escort and it seems to have more trouble starting in the heat. It takes 2 or 3 times of trying to start it before it finally turns over. I haven't had this looked at yet, but where do I begin? Is this my spark plugs or a starter problem? Or something altogether?
    Please help.

We sorted the solution by disconecting the terminals on the battery.
on the negative terminal there should be two thick leads of which both go to the negative side of the of these is an earth.
The earth lead needs to be replaced by cutting it off and the best lead to use is the negative lead of a set of heavy duty leads and re-feed this to the negative side of the batterey and the other end to any part of the engine which has a bolt that is easy to undo and get to.
If you earth it here, then the vehicle will start every time and the clicking will be gone for good.
Its very difficult to explain and is time consuming, but ends the problem for good in the long run.

1998 escort don't start first time,I have to crank the key at lest twice befor it starts, then its ok starts fine unless stand about for hours, then the same problem, can you help me pleases.

sounds like the check valve in the fuel pump is not keeping the fuel line full of fuel. try cycling the key to the on position a few times prior to cold start. wait a few seconds between each time you cycle it to on. this allows the fuel punp to run for a couple seconds each time, which will fil the fuel line. if this works, then that is the problem, sadly the only way to cure it, is to drop the tank and replace the fuel pump. good luck.

How do i change spark plugs on a ford escort sport

start from the left hand side of the engine as you are facing it, take one out at a time this way you will not mix up the HT leads ok.
Take the lead off number one plug and unscrew the old plug anticlockwise with a socket that fits the sparkplug, once you have done that put the new one in and tighten up clockwise and put the lead back on and push down so you hear a click but do not tighten up to tight or you weill damage the treads on the plug. Just enough so you feel the pressure on the racket. then do the same with all of them.

I hope this help's?

Hard to start

when you first get into the car, turn the key on all the way till all the lights come on on the dash, but not far enough to start it , wait a minute, then crank it over, if it starts right up, then it is a fuel pressure problem, possibly your fuel pump. if it still wont start right up, your fuel lines from the tank may be clogged.

Car will not crank sometimes unless you turn the key many times.

Check battery connections. Sometimes a weak connection will fail under very high loads like starting.

You could also look at your check engine when you crank the engine. If the unit stays lit during cranking, you are missing the input from the crank sensor.
