Question about 1997 Ford Mustang Cobra

1 Answer

Convertible top won't respond.

I have a 93 Mustang LX Convertible and when I try to put the top down (both latches are unlatched) I hear a clicking sound coming from the rear of my car (I'm assuming it's the motor making the sound.) and then nothing happens. I've tried the switch in both directions with the same result. So far, I've checked the motor to make sure that it's in place and that all the connections are made from it. I haven't checked the fuses yet because there is power going to the motor, so it shouldn't be a fuse. This has happened once before and the problem just kinda went away on its own.

Hi Deborah , Your going to have to take to the dealer , there is a DTC - diagnostic trouble code stored in the ( FTC ) folding top control module . Such as this one DTC B1296

My 2008 Chrysler Sebring Limited convertible has a problem with the trunk latch. It won't stay closed. It keeps unlatching. Do you know what the problem is? How do I get it to stop unlatching?

I did this to my car once. Be sure the latch isn't closed as you are trying to close the trunk. With the trunk open pop the trunk once, then see if the trunk latches properly.

How do you put the top down. I have a rental, and their is no owner's guide.

1.Empty the trunk of all contents
2.Park on a level surface and set parking brake, shift auto trans into Park or manual into R
3.Turn the ignition off.
4.Open the trunk.
5.Pull down the convertible top latch located above the rearview mirror and turn it counterclockwise to unlatch . Leave the latch open and turned to prevent damage.
6.Pull rearward on the side edge of the convertible top and pull it off of
the windshield frame.
7.Push the convertible top down into the trunk
8.After the top is stored, push on the convertible top to ensure that the top is fully retracted and securely stored.
9.Close thet runk by pressing down from the rear center of it with a swift, firm motion.

Letting the top down

I had the same problem for four years until I purchased a CD from Ebay titled "BMW E30 Convertible". I discovered, that I was opening the top up incorrectly. The top works fine. Unlatch the top from the windshield frame, then lift up the back half of the top, unlatch the top lid, rise it up and lower the top into the compartment, close and latch the soft top lid. Hopes this helps.

I am taking a wild guess the motor gearbox has an overload clutch to protect it should the hood joints become tight or if something fouls the hood operation. That is possibly what you hear clicking - like a cordless drill/driver when the screw bottoms...

If that is in fact what is happening then either the clutch has become weak and overrides too easily or the hood joints need some maintenance - maybe a bit of both.
