My wife´s 2000 Explorer´s engine light turned on today. Nothing else seems to be causing trouble. Mechanic ran scan and it has turned off. But he explained he was not totally sure what the problem was. He suspects emission problems due to sparkplug malfunction but we will wait and see. Enrique Romero. Honduras. C,A.

You should not drive a car if the check engine light comes on and you do not know what the problem is. In some cases the check engine light means a serious problem and I know could cost a lot of money to repair. Mine came on and cost $800 dollars to repair as I tried to drive it.
Two things; 1) check the coolant level of the coolant overflow. Sometimes when the coolant level is low it will trigger the check engine light to come on. 2) If the car is running hot or high check the thermostat. These are the least expensive ways to go, before any costly repairs.
the vsc and trac lights illuminate because of the check engine light. you need to have the check engine light diagnosed or pull the codes and i can help you
With the engine running spray come carb cleaner into the intake and see if there is a slight improvement. Then add some more cleaner into the fuel at the fuel filter. Start the engine & shuttle pump the throttle to clear all nozzles. Also check the plugs and rub it with sand paper and adjust the gap appropriately, and if its all blackish or the spark points have worn out, then change them......................sodeep

check engine light will come on when the vent of the gas tank has gas in it. that is one of the sensor in the newer car since later part of 2005
