First things first. Is the fluid full, You said the clutch still works. ? is it stuck in 2nd? or - only 2nd gear works and no other gear? No reverse? Second thing to check would be to look at the linkage and or cable/ or cables I need more info.
your car has a safety switch. If ur car has a man tran then it will be a clutch switch, if it is automatic then it is a nurture safety switch. I will not start in gear only Park or nurture. U say ur car is stuck in reverse so no it will not start. this is probably caused by a bad shift cable..
Your shifter cable sounds like it separated from the transmission or shifter or just broke. you are probably stuck in a moving gear so the neutral safety switch is disabling the ignition.
Sounds like you have a broken or disconnected shift cable. There are two cable attaching at different angles.Either disconnected at trans or below shifter.
You need to remove top off gearbox and with a pry bar or screw driver pull the selector back into neutral Your gearlever has popped out of selector Gearbox does not need to be removed
