Car skips and sputters and dies

Hi. So recently my car has really been giving me a headache. I have a 1997 Chevy Malibu. Every so often (sometimes every 20 minutes or sometimes every couple hours) while driving my car will start to catch, or sputter, or skip, or misfire, however you want to put it. Half the time it will recover and start running normally again, and half the time it will completely die and I will attempt to successfully navigate my way to the shoulder without power steering or brakes. But then as soon as throw 'er in park and turn the key again, the Malibu starts up again with any problems and I cruise along smoothly until the next time it happens. It seems to happen the most when I am going slower and braking or driving on bumpy ground.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks, Michael

I have the same problem with a 1993 Mitsubishi Mirage. I have replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, distributor cap, catalytic converter, spark plugs, and wires. When I feel it start to die, I hold in the clutch, turn it off and re-start it. Starts up and runs for another 15 to 20 minutes. I have 185,000 miles. Any suggestions?

I have a cadillac CTS and the ignition will turn on, it sounds like it's turning and about to catch, but then doesn't. If I wait about 10 minutes, then it will be fine, but this happens whenever I'm standing idle at a stop sign or something, so quite inconvenient. It just started up today.

I can be driving 60 mph and then the van slows down to 50 40 30 so on... If I let it set a while like hours it will start up and run fine for a few days then it does it all over again.

My problem was the fuel pump. The one I got didn't seat in the bracket like my previous one. This caused the fuel line to lose pressure. Turn off and back on, and it was fine for a while. I put a gasket spacer between the fuel pump and the bottom of the bracket (in October) and haven't had the problem since. Hope this helps.

I would check your o2 sensor. Take it yo your local parts store, usually they will hook up and read off your codes for free telling you the sensor that is bad.

I have a problem with my car where the build in theft system kicks on and I have to leave teh car in the on position for about 10 minutes turn it to the off position and then start it. You will see the theft light blinking and wait til it stops and disappears before trying to start it again.

I suspect that your fuel system is faulty. Check for a clogged fuel filter, or if your fuel pump don't run at all, replace the "fuel pump relay". Fuel pump may be faulty. Sometimes your fuel pump will run, but be too weak to hold pressure, which will let your car idle somewhat, but be too weak to run the engine at speed or under load.

When the check engine light is flashing, it indicates a serious condition. You need to have the car scanned for trouble codes and diagnosed, making guesses is going to waste money.

I own a 1998 Chevy Malibu personally, change the ignition switch I had the identical issue, the switch eventually stopped turning completely, my vehicle had to be towed!! Save yourself a headache, I got one from a junkyard for 2.00, but it had to be programmed for the vehicle, I would take it to a trusted shop or dealer.

My 2003 Chevy Malibu suddenly lost power climbing a hill. The engine light started flashing. I was able to drive it home at 30 mph.

Could either be the ignition system - ie, coil packs, fuel filter, fuel pump, or bad gas. Was it sputtering?

1997 Chevy Malibu will start and then sputter.

It sounds like your engine is not getting a proper spark because of bad plugs. Check your spark plugs. To be safe install new ones anyway. I prefer NGK plugs.

1997 chevy malibu stopped while driving on highway, no sounds, no warnings, just quit. Anyone has a similar problem. Car will not start anymore, attemps to, but just sputters.

I had the same problem with my 2002 Cheavy Malibu. First check the fuses under the drivers side under the hood. Look in your manuel to find the location for the fuel fuse location. If that doesnt work then look at your fuel filter.

the jerking and then died part sounds like you sezzed up your engine in other words you just (crapped a wagon) - the other use out of your dead car is to turn it in to a wagon.
