1992 Jeep Cherokee starting problems

Hey myob247,

You mentioned the ASD relay could be bad. I cannot find where it is located on the engine. I have a Haynes manual and it doesn't even mention it.

thanks,

I attached a fuel pressure gauge to the rail, started the jeep and it sat at 32 psi. Disconnected the vacuum pressure went up to about 41 psi. Shut off the engine pressure dropped to almost nothing. Started the engine again, pinched off the fuel return, pressure sent to 63 psi, shutoff engine pressure dropped to almost nothing again. Would this be an indication of a bad check valve in the fuel pump or leaking line?

Under the hood on the passenger side just above the battery. It's in your Power Distribution Center (PDC) just above your battery. Once you take the lid off, a diagram is shown on the inside of the lid. The auto shutdown relay location will be shown there. It will be identified as "ASD"

You can try swapping it out with one of the other ones to see if it makes any difference. If not next suspect would be ECM.

My 1997 grand Cherokee start and off what should I do

i guess, you meant , engine issues, engine cranks ok , starts then stalls right?
that is cause (most times) by the ASD relay dropping out.
is it? dropping just before the stall?
if yes, the scan tool will tell you why, there are 8 reasons...
all documented in all jeep 93+ FSM books.

does car have Immobilizer option?
if yes, that too will drop the ASD so (bad boys) cant steal it.
so if the immo light (generic name) is on or flashes before cranking or during cranking, then the IMMO is UNHAPPY.
again scan it.
if yes, IMMO did you try both key fobs, as came with new car?

http://www.fixkick.com/Jeeps/ASD.html

if the ASD does not drop.
the that can be 50 reasons... a huge list.
major engine parts.
never had a REAL tuneup in a decade? (spark bad)
lost spark
bad engine.
bad fueling (too much flooding or too weak or none)

if engine floods?, crank with wide open throttle per operators guide.

Have a 2004 jeep Cherokee that has a p1389 code in

gee 1, last year of Cherokee is 2001, so you meant Grand right??????
gee2, wont start or stalls, no other symptoms????? just 1 DTC, no others using a real scan tool? that be first huh?
Geewise 3, what engine, wow, wrong car, no engine or country.?

the FSM covers this, and the ASD has 8 ways to trip off line'
UP TO 8 ways , just like old wonder bread had.

answering for 2004 GC, (i actually look it up in the real book)
not google butchered DTCs.
P means power train, 1 means factory codes.
a 3 coin toss lands...
2004 GC, vin N, 4.7L v8 automatic,

it reads. verbatim.
Trouble Code: P1389
No Auto Shutdown Relay Output Voltage To PCM
Number of Trips to Set Code: 1
  • Catastrophicmonitor failure.
Trouble Code Conditions:
Engine cranking; and the PCM did not detect any voltage on the ASD Relay Output circuit to the PCM during the CCM test.
Possible Causes:
  1. ASD relay connector is damaged, loose or shorted
  2. ASD relay output circuit is open between the relay and PCM
  3. ASD relay power circuit is open (test power from Fused B+)
  4. ASD relay is damaged or has failed
  5. PCM has failed (nah)

it means, to me.
  • the relay is unplugged
  • or fuse blown "fused B+" (a top reason, world wide)
  • the relay is bad.

2007 jeep Cherokee wont start. Radio comes on and power windows work it just wont turn over

It could still be the battery....It may not be strong enough to start it but you will still have enough to operate windows and radio....It doesnt take much power for radio....or windows Unless you move the windows constantly then it will run battery down quick.....Check battery voltage and battery connections...Also jeeps have a ASD relay which means AUTOMATIC SHUT DOWN...This could be a bad relay.........This is under hood at fuse Power Block Box.....This could of course be the starter also...Check wiring connected to starter....Sometimes it will vibrate loose and it will do nothing....And the crank sensor will cause it not to start....It is on the passenger side of engine block under and at back of engine ...You cant miss it if you can get under it.....It has another relay the same size as the ASD relay...You can test the ASD relay by switching the two and this will tell you if the ASD relay is blown...If this doesnt change anything and still wont start it is not the relay.
I am chrysler tech and have jeep manuals.......I can help you through this....I need engine size and exact problem....Does it turn over at all ?..How many miles on it ?..And does the dash lights and gauges operate when you turn the switch on like normal...?..Make sure it is in park and your foot is on the brake while turning it over.............................................Metalpoet
