99 xg Grandeur 109000km - speedo spasmodically drops to zero - comes back by decellerating, then accel. Now the transmission(auto) goes into 3rd gear at speeds 60kmh to 100kmh (spasmodic) Dealer says elec fault can't help -- auto electrician says could take very long time to diagnose.

1999 528i transmission bad or sensors bad

the speed is getting signal from the abs unit, but that not only were the signal goes, it can go to the sunroof air bags auto box and so on. if the signal is being distorted, the speedo will drop or stop. inturn same for the auto box. i would start with the sunroof unit as its a common problem with the sunroof units to go faulty. it may still work but when you open the sunroof it sends a signal to the speedo and the engine that its open and adjust the mix and speed. also the same if you have A/C there is a signal that needs to be sent to adjust engine control. it takes a lot of figuring out when this problem arises as there are a lot of possibilities. I think its a blue wire but its been a few years so don't count me to that, code for the wire will be in a haynes manual ti goes from abs to speedo and has braces off to everything it goes to.

The speedo gage drops down to zero while driving then drops down afew gears for afew minutes then comes back to normal.how can i fix this problem

Could be the speed sensor in the transmission. You could replace the sensor or monitor the output with a meter.

Speedometer goes to zero every now and then

Does this happen intermittently, im guessing so with the wording "Now And Then" also when your coming to a junction/roundabout and the Speedo has gone to Zero, do you feel a decrease in power around 10% and dipping the clutch and braking causes the Red Warning light to flash top right hand side in the dash and the car wants to stall and or Cuts out?

I have this same Problem and Believe it could be the Speed sensor on the gearbox ( Around £30 on ebay that i have found) 50+ from ford Dealer.

My Quick fix to get the speedo back from zero this is what i have found works to make it come back It does not Totally fix the problem, it just makes it come back if the speedo has dropped again whilst Moving.

This normally stops it happening again until the next time the car is turned off or stood for a while I have noticed it happens More often when the fuel gauge is Below 1/4 and its been raining for some reason? so im thinking it might have a loose connector on the sensor and its getting wet? but have to get under to have a check.

try this to see if it works, it does for me and i have a V Reg Focus LX 1.6

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What to do when you notice the Speedo has gone Off .

1) turn the lights on and off then,

2) change DOWN a gear to 3rd, then UP to 4th then to 3rd again

3) and tap the Gear stick on the palm part with the palm of your hand quite hard and wiggle the Gear Stick left and right with dipped clutch in Neutral .

4) turn the main dipped headlights on and off again ( i found also if i have the Heater running it makes this happen so turn it on and off a few times)

5) if it is safe to do so, pull over and turn the car OFF leaving the key in the ignition and then back ON Within 10 Seconds, repeat 1) , 2) 5) again and repeat untill the Speedo Returns (normally within 2-3 mins of this procedure)

if anyone else knows how to fix it please Post any info :)

'99 Beetle cruise control surge and speedometer has slight flutter.Occasionally speedometer drops to zero mph and cruise will then stop working. The "surge" is so bad that you can not drive with cruise on....

I would take a blind guess and sat the speedo sensor has an issue. 99' beetle should have an 01M auto, and the speed sensor is also the dipstick for the final differental drive. search around this area of the trans for the cable and snoop around. loose at the trans ? bad connection somewhere??

I washed the engine, then cruise control stopped functioning, before that rpm needle went mad and fluctuated from 0 to max on and off. I think there is a short circuit , but don't know where to find or...

If you have an after-market cruise control system, you'll need the specs from the company that manufactured it. Otherwise, it's guess work. Does the Check Engine light come ON when this happens? Whenever the "Check Engine" light comes on, there is always a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) stored in the ECM (Engine Control Module). You'll need an OBDII (On-Board-Diagnostics) scanner to retrieve any codes recorded/set in ECM. See if there's a P0500 DTC. I imagine the cruise control system uses this signal as well as the Speedo.

The vehicile's speed sensor is on the transmission almost directly below the throttle body

It is a three pin connector (pin 1=power-12VDC, pin2=ground, & pin3=signal).

Consider a used trans from the bone yard
