Question about 1985 Mercedes-Benz 300

1 Answer

Hello, I have an overheating problem on my 1993 MB 300E. I have changed thermostate to no avail. No leaks are visible anywhere. New Bher radiator just installed. I keep on losing coolant and see the coolant boil in the expansion tank. Could it be the fan clutch? I have turned it by hand and it did turn about 1/4 of a turn then stopped. auxilary fans come on when temp is over 100 degrees. I have also recently lost heat. I get air from vents bot not hot. Kindly help if you can. thank you.

Sounds like a cylinder head problem. If the coolant is boiling over into the bottle, but not leaking anywhere, that the engine is using its own pressure to move the coolant. There could be a cracked valve guide or just a blown cyl head gasket. Have a mechanic/or friend test the cylinder pressures with a gauge and this should tell your where the problem is and what the next step should be.

Not to sound too basic, but what shape is the thermostate in and is it in properly? I have seen them placed in up-side down before. I'd check it or replace it, be certain of proper temp for thermostate

Thanks,
Tom

It is located on the left side of the engine, rear, and an element type filter. The cap for the housing will be black and simply unscrews and once removed cap has been removed, be sure to replace the o ring also. System should hold about 7-8 quarts.

Overheating from leak not visible

Hook up a cooling system pressure tester. If you have a pin point leak, the pressure from the tester will shoot coolant out of the leaking area.

Overheating and blowing cold air. 1999 Grand Prix

It sounds like your water pump may have gone bad. The water pump pushes the antifreeze through the engine, heater core and Radiator which is regulated by the thermostate. Sorry for the bad news but i hope this helps, and Good luck

Overheating

1. start the engine and leave the radiator cap open.
2. put a cardboard cover or a rug in the front of you radiator.
3. let it runs 20 minutes or more, see if it is overheated and see the water or coolant in the radiator circulated or not. If not, as soon as you have already changed water pump. thermostate and check the hoses, no leak, I think your radiator was blocked.

Did you put stop leak before?
