I have a similar problem , my 98 Ram stops charging and when tap on the little black box its starts charging again ? This is the voltage regulator and hard to find or not available at the auto part stores ? Used is the best bet if you can find it ?
Look in your fuse box and see if you see a fuse labeled alternator. It may be marked "ALT". Try to locates that. The alternator is all electrical. There is a chance it is shot if it took a good impact. Locate it, try it, and write me back.
John, it's not your fault if you followed the Haynes Maunual as their instruction WAS WRONG.
You need to:
1. Behind where the Alternator used to be there is an electrical box mounted on the back wall. Take it off.
2. The Black Mounting Brace where the Alternator used to be. There are 15mm bolts down on the front of the Engine holding this on. You need to take out the top ones and just loosen the bottom one enouth to rotate this Black Mounting Brace out of the way. These Bolts are a little difficult to see. Use a mirror and flashlight and/or feel. A rotating closed/open wrench-ratch combo works best.
Let me know if this worked..I know it will I had the same problem when I first did mine.
you can go out under the hood on the left side of the engine compartment and along the top far left toward the windshield an the firewall you will find a black plastic box. this is where the blower motor is located. With the blower motor turned on and with your strongest arm hit the black box with your hand. It could be stuck or the brushes in the motor could need replacing. this happened to me and it is still working today. i hope this helps
ok we have four connections at the alternator( black wire is ground) (white with blue positive direct from the battery) and two wires connector in the regulator(yellow with black that goes to charge indicator the red light and goes to fuse 7 10a fuse block inside) the blue with yellow goes to fuse 65- 7.5a in the left fron engine comparment fuse box))#1 check for ground at the black wire= #2 check for positive at the white with blue wire (allwas with power) this wire is protected with 100a fuse is in the left front engine comparment fuse box, remenber== check the 100a fuse and the two fuses that protect the regulator. when you turn the ignition switch to the on position power goes to the alternator by the yellow black wire and activate the alternator to work.
Their is a relay in the black box of relays and fuses under the bonnet. The blue relay is the charging one. I have changed a good few alternator's and a common problem with isuzu alternators is they over charge this burns out the blue relay so you will need to replace it if faulty. You can check it with the black relay beside the blue one. Take out the blue one and put the black one in its place start up and try it for charging. Only use the black one as a trial put it back and buy a blue one if needed. Cheer's
I can help regarding the polarity on my GMC 2500 Van alternator....
Facing the rear of the alternator, the red wire attaches to the screw terminal on the left. The black (grd) attaches to the screw terminal on the right. The top has a connector with 2 spade terminals. - one (left tab) is the "r" or relay terminal and the right one is the 'f' or field terminal.
Does this help... Red on left and blk on right....
