Question about Toyota Pickup

Open Question

1977 toyota hi-lux 20R "Chinook" camper. Experiencing intermittent spark (distrubitor has points). Cannot find any information about transistor ignitor circuit (Califorinia model) & connection wiring. Truck runs fine then just stops with no other symptoms or warnings. Trying the truck later will find everything OK and will fail again at a later time. I have seen a detailed description of the ignitor with a write-up on how to bypass the ignitor & use the points to get you back home. I would like to restore the system & keep the transistor ignitor if possible. Any suggestions or info. links would be great THANKS

SOURCE: Lack of power when accelerating

You really should have a code check done. There are numerous items that can give you similar symptoms. Two places to look are the fuel filter (usually overlooked till they gum up, and the throttle position sensor (but test it first with an ohmeter. You will need a manual (vehicle specific ones are available at most larger parts stores and most of those stores also do code testing free)

You could find sheets of gasket material in well-stocked autoparts stores. They are water proof, and you could make one yourself that should solve the gasket leaking problem.
Once you find a sheet, try and make a stencil from the top of the manifold, then cut it out with a good scissors.

Fuel pump relay

if it is starting that is normal if not take off your distrubitor cap and check for spark if no spark check the wire going to the coil pack for spark, if very little or no spark replace your dist. cap rotor and coil pack.

Need to change engines

If you have a 22r carbed then all 22r carbed engines from 1981-1995 will interchange. You may need to use sensor out of your old engine however. The 20r,22r,22re,22ret all have the same mounts and tranny bolt patterns. how ever there are lot of differences. you can swap from a 22r to a 22re but you must also swap the entire vehical wiring harness to do it right. if you have a 3.0L i would keep the same engine. some people have swap to the tacoma 3.6L but that is a expensive swap not exsactly bolt on so to say. If you have a 22re then stay with the 1986-1987 22re because the newer 22re use different computers, electronics ,sensors and more.. Same story with the 22ret. I hoped this helped.
