You may have a low battery in the remote. I will get you more information.
key (insert in ignition, turn to on, remove, press/hold lock while pressing unlock 3 times quickly)
fuse in the rear by the battery - the one labelled "Central Locking System"
1. Open central locking system using the car key
2. Get into the car and close all doors.
3. Using the car key, switch ignition lock briefly to ignition lock position 1 and then switch off again. The switching time must remain under 5 seconds, otherwise the system is not ready for initialization.
4. At the radio transmitter press and hold button 2 in.
5. Press button 1 three times( in a space of 10 seconds) button 2 must remain held in
6. Release button 2.
7. The ZV signal by means of locking and immediate unlocking that a radio transmitter has been successfully initialized.
Try to reprogram at first if this does not work you may need to replace the batteries. They may just be too weak. Then you will have to reprogram anyway.
yes it does affect the console...the interior lights not coming on leads me to believe that you may have fuse box problems. do you have a fuse box fuse location manual?
check those fuses and get back with me please.
I found this technique worked on my 2001 X5 and 2002 525iTa
To do this procedure you need to have one working key and one key that needs to be programmed.
with the both keys, get in the car and close all windows and doors.
Put working key into the ignition and turn to position 1 (the accessories should turn on)
turn the key back to position 0 and take key out of the ignition.
Using the working key, hold down the unlock button, press the Roundel
(lock button) 3 times, and release the unlock button. Doors should lock
and unlock.
With the new key, hold down the unlock button and press the Roundel
(lock button) 3 times and let go of the unlock button. Doors should lock
and unlock and you're done!!
Alternate procedure if above doesn't work or if you do not have a working remote:
1. turn key to position 1 five times very quickly
2. remove key
3. Hold unlock button then press lock button 3 times, release unlock button.
4. If you have another key do the same button pressing within 30 seconds
5 turn on igntion to finalize
i pulled these from a some manuals.
1. turn the key to on position in car and turn off within 5 sec.
2. hold the arm button (the big one in the center)
3. Press the unlock button three (3) times
4. release the arm button
5. turn key to on position and off within 5 sec.
if successful your doors will lock and unlock. program all your keys at the same time just repeat 2-4 before you do step 5.
I removed the key from the ignition between steps 3 and 4 - now it's programmed and working fine again
If none of these resolve you issue. you may want to replace remote batteries and have dealership reprogram the keys. Running out of options.
Body Control Module (GM III). may be causing this issue also.
The GM is located on the fire wall below/behind the glove box.
You can do this all yourself just search how to replace the GMIII module.
Yes sir
The dealer will have to help you. Good luck!

I don't think it's the remote batteries, because both remote are not working except for the rear hatch.
do you mean under the battery under the hood?
neither of these solutions worked. We don't have a battery in the rear, but I did find the fuse.
Neither solution worked. Not sure I'm doing the programing of the key correctly. I should point out that both keys stopped working execpt for the hatch at the same time.
I followed your steps on the programing the remote and it did not fix problem.
Would this also affect the button on the console? It stopped working at the same time the remotes stopped working. Also, the interior lights do not come on when doors are opened.
Wife just told me that the security system went crazy before the key remotes stopped working. She pressed the unlock button and the horn started honking, the lights started flashing and continued for about 5 minutes. Key remotes, interior lights and button on central console stopped working after alarm system went crazy.
I know where both fuse boxes are on the car. One's in the glove box, the other in the back of the car. I have the owner's manual.
I think we're S.O.L. I really appreciate your help. Looks like we're going to have to take it to the dealer.
Yes, mabpest was very helpful. Unfortunately, it looks like our problem is one where we are going to have to take it to the repair shop.
